My dad lived in Erdington during the war, and used to go to lots of games at the Villa. He told me that all sorts of players used to "guest" for clubs, depending where they were stationed, and he saw loads of internationals who were in the forces turn out for us.
Apparently Aldershot used to have a cracking team for that reason.

It's "Midlands Soccer at War 1939-46" compiled by Tony Matthews. ISBN number 1-873171-01-3.

It's only 48 pages long so not worth paying a fortune for.
