They said he'd got it last  night on there- but now they reckon Monday or Tuesday. Seems pretty clear cut but 24 hrs on it hasn't been confirmed.

How Gerard Houllier the Eurocrat won over Aston Villa while Sven Goran Eriksson failed to impress

By Neil Moxley Last updated at 7:19 PM on 3rd September 2010

Aston Villa will announce their new management team early next week with Gerard Houllier expected to link up with current caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald.

The Birmingham club are expected to introduce the duo formally either on Monday or Tuesday after bringing their search for Martin O'Neill's successor to a close.

Houllier, 63, is understood to favour becoming boss in his own right - although Villa want a directorial figure who can help plug the gap left by the walkout by O'Neill and his staff.

Villa owner Randy Lerner compiled a four-man shortlist, aimed at making a quick decision before Villa's next league outing at Stoke on September 13.

Sven Goran Eriksson failed to impress and Houllier's greater experience and pan-European contact base were favoured over Alan Curbishley.

No-gos: Alan Curbishley (left) and Sven Goran Eriksson were approached by Villa

Lerner was keen to hand MacDonald a job in the set-up, but it was the failure to progress in the Europa League - and not the 6-0 hammering by Newcastle - that cost him the chance to manage in his own right.

It appears the ex-Liverpool midfielder, 49, will be given first-team coaching duties with the Frenchman directing from above.

Virtually same story as last night when they ran with houllier lands villa job- and we are still waiting 24 hrs later on it. Check 11.10pm last night on this thread, we were discussing it then.

I am sure Houllier blooded a young energetic midfielder called Gerrard. Could he repeat the feat with Delph?

Exciting stuff

Can we have a new pole?  Assuming the 4 candidates were: Sven, Houllier, Curbs and Kmac.  Who would you give the job to, given that it had to be one of them?

In general, Houllier has been very successful in his managerial career.  He is held in high esteem by the French who credit him with being one of the major contributors to their world cup win due to his work at Clairefontaine and when he was the technical director.  Don't underestimate the job he did at Liverpool as he took over the boot room and a bunch of players who loved pissing around with uncle Roy.

Three things worry me if we appointed Houllier.

He hasn't managed for over 3 years.

His big signings for Liverpool were failures for the most part.

Despite his links with Clairefontaine and the massive investment made to the Liverpool academy, it failed to produce.

Out of Sven, Houllier, Curbs and Kmac for first team manager I would have gone for:

1. Houllier
2. Sven
3. Curbs
4. Kmac

I'd be happy if it is Houllier. I'm sure the style of football if our players can adapt to will be a crowd pleaser. If this rumour is true we could be in for a good season.
We have a very good team. A bit of tweaking, organising and direction fromHoullier and McDonald could be good.
Interesting.......

I  think houllier should have the freedom to choose his own coaching staff I'd offered the job- it never really works when a manager has his coach imposed on him and I hope that would not be the case in this instance .

Except he worked happily with Phil Thompson.

He's already working on the construction site down the road from me.

None of the candidates inspire me, but Houllier is a particularly ridiculous suggestion, he's at the end of his career and he's got a dodgy ticker whereas we need someone who could potentially be with us for ten years or so.

Remind me how old Alex Ferguson is? Wenger is 60 now and doesnt look like slowing down anytime too soon......

Not sure what I think about houllier. He did buy a lot of dross and was lucky that carragher, gerrard and Owen came through. I also seem to recall his teams being quite boring. Would be very dubious about a director of football post as I can't think of an example of it working well. km would still be doing the matchday stuff so not sure I see the advantages. What were the benefits to Liverpool of a supposedly improved scouting network?
