My brother was very happy with the idea of having Houllier in charge, until the ensuing discussion lead to his realisation that Houllier wasn't Benitez.  Funny how his reaction changed after that.

fuck me id have houlliers gardner managing our club over benitez

My first choice was Martin Jol. I wonder how hard the club have tried to get him away from Ajax. He was happy to leave to go to Fulham until his board stopped him. I wonder if they tested their resolve a second time round?

I suspect that what limited chance there was of nabbing Jol disappered after Ajax qualified for the CL group stages and then landed a group including Real Madrid and AC Milan. Can't see him wanting to sacrifice that challenge.

I think given jols desire to get back in the premiership he would have jumped at the chance had we bought out his contract- fulham mist tempted him, villa I'm sure would have done !

Randy doesn't seem the kind of ruthless chairman who would move heaven and earth to get his man - randy is a nice guy and plays it by the book.

Ajax hadn't qualified for the Champions League group stages at the time. Can't see him passing up that opportunity now.

Before i press post I think this quote may not have worked properly.

I can't help but think that Houllier would be a short-term fix to steady the ship, similar to GT Mk2 (only with better results hopefully).  The bloke has had health issues and is in his sixties, so maybe he'll run things until the right man becomes available in a year or so, then he'll stay at the club in an advisory role.  There's no way he can be looking at it as a long-term role.

Not my first option but Houllier is fine by me. I might even look forward to a transfer window for the first time in ages. The unknown feeling of seeing a link to a player whose name (and Country) I am not fimilar with, and thinking we might actually sign him will be liberating! I want him a Manager, none of the DOF stuff. If we do get one of them then I think it would not be someone with the profile of Houllier.

I saw Jol beng interviewed around the time the Fulham thing was going on, and he said he fancied a return to London but his board had blocked it.

so there you go then, they blocked it before they qualified for CL, so they wernt going to let him go after,
i'm sure Randy +co tried,
but they were blocked the same

None of the candidates inspire me, but Houllier is a particularly ridiculous suggestion, he's at the end of his career and he's got a dodgy ticker whereas we need someone who could potentially be with us for ten years or so.

The guys on the Irish Villains website seem to think that there's going to be an announcement shortly. Hmm.

I agree. It is ridiculous to bring in a manager who is a winner. It is ridiculous to bring in a man who will revolutionize our poor scouting network.

His heart was something to do with the aorta i believe. Not really related to a continuous dodgy ticker.

Houllier is a great manager. He IS the best man for the job.

I hope you're right because it's now being reported that he's got the job. However I still think he's too old at 63 to be able to give us more than a couple of years considering his health issues.
