You've got wonder what it is that we're selling if it isn't enough to tempt even the likes of Moyes or McLeish.

Moyes doesn't want to leave Everton - yet - and who says McLeish was ever an option?

...so Moyes was?

A month in & we're still waiting for these top class managers that would love to manage a club like Villa to throw their hats in.

oh, didn't realise we only got one vote. but guess that makes sense.

Of the 5 candidates (supposedly - maybe we could start a new poll with just them?) GH would get my vote. As long as he comes as manager, not Director of Football. That never works in the PL. The players don't know who's the boss.

I may have forgot or missed it completely -

Houllier
Sven
Curbishley
K Mac

Who is the other one?

hmmm...Moyes, maybe. The 5th one is a mystery. It isn't Bradley or Klinsmann by all accounts. I see Donadoni has thrown his hat in the ring.

How cool would that be? I'd love one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to be our manager.  Turtle Power!

So lets do a quick recap...

Southgate - not wanted
Curbishley - defo not wanted
Kev M - only if we have too, and maybe only for this season
Bilic - no prem experience so would appear to be ruled out
Moyes - yes but probably wont come
Sven - initially no, but compared to others yes
Phil Brown - gag
Hoddle - see Phil Brown
Gerrard Hoooolia - would be interesting to see if he can replicate some of the success he had with Liverpool
Klinsman - have doubts
Mcleish - rather not
Bradley - see Bilic and calls our great game... Soccer [and prefers the good old US of A national team
Jol - I'm not sure was never really impressed.

The candidate list doesnt look promising, the only contender who has pretty much universal backing is Moyes, and the evidence would suggest he is staying where he is, so unless we can prise him [or Jol] out of there present club, there is only one word to describe the next season...

I don't supose we could convince Guus Hidink to combine jobs? I mean how busy can you be as an International coach? He is still with Turkey isn't he? Surely we could convince him to resign even. Maybe he is Number five?  No probably not. sigh.

Oh I dunno - the current list is just so: not whelming.

Pete colley live at villa park on sky saying no decision yet but it's between kmac and houllier- both Sven and curbs have been discounted.

Colley reckons macdonald will be the new manager which fills me with dread.

Interesting article from a few years ago, after Liverpool had sacked Houlier ( 110m spent, finsihed 9th before he was sacked)

Look at the potential replacements for him.

Plus ca change.......

Liverpool Echo (Liverpool, England)

FOOTBALL: THE END OF A REDS ERA - Who is the man to pick up the Anfield reins?;

Byline: DAVID PRENTICE Chief Sports Writer

LIVERPOOL'S Board has already begun its search for Gerard Houllier's successor.

Bookies Ladbrokes make Celtic manager Marton O'Neill the hot favourite, but there is also support for Charlton's young coach Alan Curbishley, Champions League finalist Jose Mourinho and Valencia's talentedboss Rafael Benitez.

Echo Sport analyses the claims of the men in the frame.

MARTIN O'NEILL-Odds 9/4.

LINKED with a switch to Anfield on an almost monthly basis throughout his successful managerial reign at Celtic,O'Neillhas constantly refuted the reports.

His achievement in securing another Scottish League and Cup doubleat the weekend was soured when he was forced to spend the press conference fending off fresh rumours.

Proven at Leicester City in the Premiership and north of the border at Glasgow Celtic, O'Neill's glittering reputation is deserved - but sources inside Anfield suggest the bookies' confidence may be misplaced.

ALAN CURBISHLEY -4/1

ONE of the new breed of vibrant, young coaches who has performed aminor miracle at Charlton.

Curbishley has not only produced an upwardly mobile team which plays attractive football, he has done so on a shoe-stringbudget.

Liverpool, however, may want a manager with greater experience on a European stage.

RAFAEL BENITEZ -5/1

Benitez has achieved spectacular results at unfashionable Valencia- toppling both of Spain's bigs pending giants Real Madrid and Barcelona this season.

In addition to La Liga crown,he has added the UEFA Cup this season.

Some reports claim Benitez's unfamiliarity with the English language may count against him,but his agent claimed yesterday his English is fine - and a lack of fluency hardly hindered Claudio Ranieri from winning plenty of friends at Stamford Bridge.

JOSE MOURINHO -5/1

Seemingly nailed on as Claudio Ranieri's heir-apparent at StamfordBridge - but until an announcement is made he will continue to be linked with other posts.

Leading Porto into the Champions League final tomorrow night, he learned his trade under Bobby Robson at Barcelona.

He also lifted the UEFA Cup last season when Porto overcame Celtic.

GORDON STRACHAN - 6/1

A passionate, never-say-die midfielder with Aberdeen, ManchesterUnited and Leeds,Strachan carried that fire across into his managerial life.

After a solid grounding at Coventry he achieved considerable success at Southampton, before taking a complete break from the game. Now revitalised and ready to return -he is a 6/1 shot.

STEVE McCLAREN - 6/1

HIGHLY regarded both at Middlesbrough and in the England international set-up,McClaren is not.

A thoughtful tactician and a good man-motivator, the Anfield boardis unlikely to share the bookies' optimism at his chances

Exactly the point.

Had he left at the start of the summer, the list would have looked a bit different. Leaving when he did limited our options.

I'd say the apparent reluctance to "poach" somebody else's manager has been more of a limiting factor.  I have to say that without actually knowing who the boss will be yet, I'm very disappointed with the list of names so far.  I'm trying to talk myself into being excited by a Houllier/MacDonald partnership, but in truth it's really not what I expected to see 5 years in now that O'Neill has left.  All the jobless managers linked so far are out of work for a reason, and it just smacks of there not being any money left for either a decent manager or new players.

Where has this bit about not wanting to poach other managers come from? I know the General talked about it from his OWN perspective as a fan, but has the CLUB said anything about this? Who would you like to see from another club? Moyes is out as are some of the other currently employed favorites being bandied about. They have been asked and have no interest in leaving their clubs in a similar situation to how we have been left by MON. So who else? Someone like Holloway? That might be the type who might consider leaving their clubs to come to Villa. Is that the caliber you have in mind? Not having a go; just asking the question...

The fact that all of the names spoken about so far are currently unemployed speaks volumes.  I don't think for a second that every other employed manager out there has suddenly had an outbreak of conscience either.  We're one of the biggest clubs in the most popular league in the world.  If they're struggling to attract a quality manager then the "no interest" means that the club aren't doing enough to make them interested.

And as for Holloway, given the fact that we've apparently had the likes of Curbishley in, why not?  It appears to be about the standard the new austerity measures are pitched at.

the Generals just said they have looked at managers currently employed, so to say they havent is calling his post a fabrication

we need a guy who has had limited resourced but made a pretty good team play above their natural level

Like Eriksson at Benfica, when he got to the European Cup Final, or Eriksson at Gothenburg, when he won the European Cup?  If you're going to say I massivly over-simplified, don't massively over-simplify the past yourself.
