I would be happy enough with Gerard Houllier and if it involved Kev Mac as part of the coaching set up then all the better.

There isn't much option out there as the timing has been terrible for us.

I can't say I'm massively excited by the thought of a Houllier-MacDonald partnership. But then again, there are plenty who would have been happy to see MacDonald given the chance, mainly because of his coaching ability, relationship with the players, and in-depth knowledge of the way Villa is run. Whatever shortcomings MacDonald may have - PL experience, worldwide profile, standing in the overall game, contacts, the kind of reputation it can take to attract a certain type of player - can comfortably be complemented by what Houllier would bring to the table.

So... maybe it makes sense.

Exactly the point.

Had he left at the start of the summer, the list would have looked a bit different. Leaving when he did limited our options.

I'd say the apparent reluctance to "poach" somebody else's manager has been more of a limiting factor.  I have to say that without actually knowing who the boss will be yet, I'm very disappointed with the list of names so far.  I'm trying to talk myself into being excited by a Houllier/MacDonald partnership, but in truth it's really not what I expected to see 5 years in now that O'Neill has left.  All the jobless managers linked so far are out of work for a reason, and it just smacks of there not being any money left for either a decent manager or new players.

Where has this bit about not wanting to poach other managers come from? I know the General talked about it from his OWN perspective as a fan, but has the CLUB said anything about this? Who would you like to see from another club? Moyes is out as are some of the other currently employed favorites being bandied about. They have been asked and have no interest in leaving their clubs in a similar situation to how we have been left by MON. So who else? Someone like Holloway? That might be the type who might consider leaving their clubs to come to Villa. Is that the caliber you have in mind? Not having a go; just asking the question...

If we have tried for the likes of Moyes/Jol/Hughes and cannot attract them due to them having morals about not leaving their current roles so soon into the new season then so be it. We will just have to put it down to bad timing which is of course why MON probably chose when he did to leave as he knew it would have maximum effect.

How much longer do you think it will be before we hear an announcement on who the new Manager will be if you don;t mind me asking?

It'll be Monday.

Because french for Monday is Lundi, and 3 of those letters can be found in Houllier. Obvious. N'est pas

oh, didn't realise we only got one vote. but guess that makes sense.

Of the 5 candidates (supposedly - maybe we could start a new poll with just them?) GH would get my vote. As long as he comes as manager, not Director of Football. That never works in the PL. The players don't know who's the boss.

I may have forgot or missed it completely -

Houllier
Sven
Curbishley
K Mac

Who is the other one?

Moyes or Hughes? depends who you believe

Well know one really knows who the 5th candidate is, so maybe Mr Mystery will get the job, all this talk of Houllier is somewhat premature is it not.

For those who have posted last season that they wanted MON out - who on the rumoured shortlist of possible candidiates do you see as better than him?

Nobody.

Houllier? Sven? Jesus wept.

Quite. But then again, those who wanted O'Neill out didn't choose the shortlist.

I don't get the allure of Bilic. I think he's only been manager of Croatia which granted he has done quite well with some very good players, and he's the taste of today. He's young and wear's a stud in his ear so he's kinda cool I suppose so I get that. I'm not sure that makes his qualified for a top manager's job. I could be wrong.

Well he is out of work

But he'll have had no chance to do any scouting or indeed get his coaching badges, as being close to Jeremy Clarksons ego for that kind of prolonged period, will have burned out his eyes and three quarters of his brain (hence the helmet).

You've got wonder what it is that we're selling if it isn't enough to tempt even the likes of Moyes or McLeish.

maybe they are attracted by what we are selling but we're likely not going to pay stupidly to get them plus compensation, and they don't want to put their current clubs in the shit. You have to begrudgingly respect that.
