But heavy criticism from fans. You're right that they're hoping KMac can paper over the cracks but ultimately, in the long run, i think it would be the worse thing for him as in one years time he'll be replaced and will he want to stay witht he reserves? or even  be given the choice?

He'll be a manager by then, though, and moving in manager-job circles. A season with Villa and he'll walk into a lower divisions job.

Sounds plausible and maybe not the worst idea in the world. GCK's comments seem to suggest he is the preferred choice, at least short term. To try and get a manager in with time to spend money this window was always going to be unrealistic, and people who think we need to do it assume we are more desperate than we are.

That's OK for him, but do we lose a very good coach for working with our emerging youth/reserves.

I dont think Kevin wants the job and i think that has come over to the squad. Against West Ham I think they were showing what they could do for a new manager, be it K-Mac or ano, but on Sunday toward the end, it was though there mindset was, it does not matter how we perform because we dont have a manager to bollock us. We need a new manager quickly or I fear we may have a worse than average season.

I was watching yesterday evening's Midlands Today when SGT hoved into view on screen. For just a nanosecond I thought he'd been re-re-appointed... I nearly spilt my can of Brew.

I think that maybe they're writing this season off as mid-table, and anything else is a bonus.

And lose yet more of our best players? It’s a bit of a disaster at the moment and going down this route would make it worse. Why wait 12 months?  We’ve got however many millions from the Milner sale, spend it on a top manager- its not as if we’ll be able to spend the money  this season anyway, as the summer window has almost gone and January is notoriously difficult.

I think we are waiting to see what Ajax do this week. If they go out of the CL they will have to sell their best players.

I think Jol maybe 1st choice with KM as second choice.

That would make sense and be an acceptable approach, IMO.

I'd welcome Jol too, but I have my doubts about whether we're in for him. I think they're set on the cheap MacDonald route, which will cost the club in the long term and ultimately Randy.

While there's obvious urgency to end the uncertainty, it will be interesting to see exactly what KM does on Thursday and Sunday in response to Sunday. He declared naivety. Let's see what he's learned.

We better bloody hope Ajax get knocked out then. The difference between having Jol as manager and having KM as manager is vast.

I'm thinking the same thing.  Were we facing another away game then the change for NRC over Downing or Albrighton is an obvious one, but what about a home game were we're exopected to go out and take them game to them?  Also, might dropping young Marc have an adverse effect on him confidence wise?  I can honestly say that sitting here I'm not sure what team I'd pick, other than Gabby and Cuellar/Collins coming in if fit.

Aston Villa: Kevin MacDonald still favourite for Villa job ahead of interview process next week

Aug 24 2010 by Mathew Kendrick, Birmingham Mail

KEVIN MacDonald is still the leading candidate to fill Villa’s managerial vacancy on a permanent basis – despite Sunday’s 6-0 shocker at St James’ Park.

MacDonald will be in charge of Thursday’s Europa League qualifier second leg against Rapid Vienna and Sunday’s Premier League clash with Everton.

And the claret and blue hierarchy will not begin to formally speak to his rival contenders until next week when the forthcoming home games are out of the way.

Bookies’ favourites Bob Bradley, Jurgen Klinsmann and Ronald Koeman have all but been ruled out of the running to succeed Martin O’Neill in the Villa Park hotseat.

Far from being put off by MacDonald’s credentials after Sunday’s embarrassing defeat to Newcastle, Villa’s power-brokers were impressed with the caretaker’s response.

The temporarily-promoted reserve team boss bravely took the rap for the heavy losing margin and admitted he might have been a bit ‘naive’ with his team selection.

But MacDonald spoke to chairman Randy Lerner at Bodymoor Heath yesterday and he and chief executive Paul Faulkner hope Sunday’s scoreline was a freak result

Villa’s board are ready to resist any clamours for a ‘razzmatazz’ big name and prefer to continue with a safer option, like MacDonald who knows the English game.

It is thought they wish to employ a manager who can continue their steady progress rather than risk undoing four years’ good work with a knee-jerk populist ‘A-List’ appointment.

There have been plenty of preliminary discussions with agents acting on behalf of applicants, but the next stage of the recruitment process will start in earnest next week.

Villa are still reeling from the shock timing of O’Neill’s resignation five days before the start of the season and have made trying to negotiate the busy fixture list their priority.

But after the Everton game at Villa Park on Sunday there is a fortnight’s gap before the next match at Stoke on Monday, September 13, because of the international break.

The claret and blue top brass hope to use that time to appoint O’Neill’s permanent replacement so that they can start to plan for the season ahead with a degree of certainty.

With transfer deadline day now only a week away, Lerner and Faulkner will meet with MacDonald today to discuss the prospect of any arrivals or departures.

There is unlikely to be much business through the Villa Park entrance or exit doors with the managerial situation up in the air, but deals have not been completely ruled out.

One player unlikely to be leaving Villa any time soon is Luke Young with reports that West Ham have bid for the right-back believed to be wide of the mark.

And when did this happen, exactly?
