This argument is lost on the vast majority of people on this board who don't like facts.

What is that an argument for though?  O'Neill wasn't sacked, he walked out on the club that gave him an unprecedented level of control and support over the last four years.  So whatever your opinion of his reign, he has gone -  of his own free will - and he isn't coming back.

The team/squad has lost some balance with Milner leaving. I think we should try to get Eriksson in before the transfer window expires. Not all the fans will like him, but he is experienced; he will (hopefully) manage to get in a couple of signings to balance the squad and keep us within reach of top six until January. To keep going until January without any investment is too risky, in my opinion. And that is what will happen if we don't get a new manager in until September.

Agreed Eigentor on Sven. Not the popular choice, but if a more glamorous appointment is not happening, then a Sven, Kevin Mac combo would be the ideal solution with Sven able tgo bring a couple of players in. He likes a proper holding player, and is tactically fairly astute. City went wrong when Frank Sinatra basically told him he was on his way despite being 5th in the league or so at the time. Give him the job by Tuesday, and get it sorted. Oh and get Flamini while we are at it. We should be ashamed to be bullied by Barton and Nolan.

I'm too young to know how he set up during his time in Italy, but thinking back to his England and Citeh days I'd say we've got pretty much the perfect players for his type of football now.

I think Sven is more a reaction to today and seems like a quick fix on the hope that he can bring new players in before the close of the window. Give it six months and the same people will be calling for his head.

There's nothing free with Sven. I'm not against the idea, but he'd come with a hefty pay packet and a lot of attention. Balance that against a manager with masses of experience and contacts off course. If he'd be willing to come in with a firm committment to the job, and not be tempted to bail at the next big job, club or national, then it could work out well. I think the club, fans and even some of the players just needs a change of scenery right now; a different outlook on football, and type of players that are playing for us. We need some fresh ideas to push us on.

When Randy was being praised by all and sundry as being the perfect owner I cautioned that the time to start to make such pronouncements was when he'd had to do such things as appoint a new manager.

At the moment he seems incapable of doing what is the most fundamental of decisions a football club owner needs to make.

Whilst the timing of MON's departure was poor, he and his associates must have been thinking about contingencies since last spring.  Surely?

I get the impression that the club are just hoping that Kevin McDonald will work out.  I'm sorry, but just one result/performance has convinced me that it won't.

That there is no outstanding candidate to replace MON remains as true today as it was when he walked out.

We are faced with the least worst option.

Sven is not my first choice, Frank Rijkaard is. But, unlike Frank, Sven is available,has an excellent League record, and his agent Athol Still is amongst the best connected in the world. Sven likes the limelight and Villa should be an International Attraction, which Sven's appointment would guarantee.

Hodgson would have been fine, as would Hughes, Jol might have been getable at the end of last season, but not now. As reality bites, it's a case of "do what you can with what you've got where you are".

I'm not saying that he's Jose Mourinho's equal, I'm not even saying he'd be a popular choice. (Because of his reputation and, er, attention-seeking behaviour, he is likely to get stick when results are bad.) He might not even play attractive football. But he is a solid manager who is capable of getting decent results out of decent players. And he is experienced enough to know what to do to keep us within reach of qualifying for Europe. Based on today's performance, we could do worse. (Yes, it was one performance, but how many more performances do we have to base a decision upon. If we wait until the transfer window shuts, we'll risk playing half a season with an unbalanced squad and an unexperienced manager.)
