I say getting Small Heath to their highest finish in 50 years without much to spend is a pretty good achievement. Plus he did well with Hibs, Rangers and Scotland. I wouldn't say he should get the job, but he deserves to be on the list.

It is much more fun to patronise Blosers and say of course if we did want him we could obviously take him as we are ASTON VILLA, but we probably don't want him anyway.

Wouldn't it be great to take him from them?  It would sum up their status as forever being in our shadow that they get a decent manager only for him to move to us.

Yes, but there have always been teams that come out of nowhere and do really well (by their standards) and have a great season. Reading, Ipswich, Bolton, Charlton, West Ham etc... What they've done is nothing special outside their bubble.

RE: Mcleish, last time I checked, sha haven't got to a final under Mcleish and haven't finished in European positions in 3 consecutive seasons. Oh well, I'll still be waiting for sha to spend £40 million on players and then conquer Europe.

Managing at the World Cup is hardly Chembo Town. He would at least be an interesting appointment who may or may not be a success. Would rather have him than someone we know will be shit like Curbishley or Mowbray.

From the list would take Moyes but do not believe for one minute he would leave Everton for Villa.

Next would be Jol as he has experience of the PL and has gained quite a bit more experience since leaving Spurs.  He made mistakes there but I think is experience since has made him a better manager.

There is nobody else in English football that I would want that is gettable.  Young up and coming English managers would be under too much pressure to succeed.

If not Jol, another foreign manager, preferably young(ish).

Chris, you've asked this a couple of times across the two threads (and I'm sorry if a response has been put up) but, like Abramovitch at Chelsea, if you invest this kind of money in a business, then you learn this business inside out. You learn the people and their characters. He'd have known since the day he appointed MoN that, at some stage in the future that he'd have to replace him. He has the knowledge of people like Tony McAndrews and Gordan Cowans who've been the club for many years, he'll have contacts all over the world and certainly won't be sat in his office frantically picking names out of the latest eition of 4-4-2 magazine.

Would have liked Laurent Blanc. How has Didier Deschamps been doing? Can't see why on earth Moyes or Advocaat would come.

I'm sure the Mirror stories are exaggerated, but also have a kernel of truth in things like the outdated training approach and lack of ball work. My priorities are:

- proven record in league football
- tactically astute and plays passing football
- will need to be able to manage without significant new funds

Hodgson would have been perfect, as would Blanc. I'd have been less anti-Hughes than many. Martin Jol still my favourite from the likely lads, but Ajax have already resisted overtures. It's worth taking  a little time to get the right man. Bob Bradley seems available in the short term, but would be a massive risk.  As long as we don't get SGT back to provide stewardship (sorry Graham)
