Lovely stuff - Young and Carew's goals have suddenly made me look forward to the new season.

A little bit of Brummie creeping into Mr Young's accent there.
A wonderful goal too.

I went last night - 3-2 masks what was a bit of a stroll, with Villa never really getting anywhere near top gear - started with a strong line-up and gradually whittled down to an almost exclusively reserve line-up for the last 25-30 mins.
You've seen the goals. Ash's was wonderful; the chip didn't look on when he took possession and the Peterborough 'keeper's a tall guy. Young played as a striker, off Carew, last night and really enjoyed himself. In the second half, just before he came off, he tried a lovely bit of skill where he spun the ball round a defender and ran to collect - defender just nicked it off his toe.
Other than Young, Lichaj looked good. Started left-back (Martin!!!!!!) and did okay, moved to RB for much of the second half and was very comfortable. Scored a good header - though the ref missed a bit of a nudge on the defender.
Reo-Coker had bags of stamina - dare I say it, he had more in his legs on 70 mins than Petrov did on 20. Petrov worries me for the season ahead, I must say. I know it's a friendly, and the first one for the senior players, but we really must do something with him next season. Either not play him flat out, or go with an extra man in midfield.
Downing was quite-ish, one good strike in the second half when he came inside. He and Albrighton switched wings in the first half, to the detriment of both - both looked far happier when restored to left and right. Albrighton really perked up when back on the right.
One last thing.... Beye was truly awful. Destroyed twice by George Boyd early on, he showed hardly anything at RB. And when he was moved to CB for the last 25 mins, it was terrifying to watch. Played like a man who knows he has no future at Villa.

Is there anything to be made of Young playing off the striker in this game?
For example: if Milner does go, might it mean Ash will play in the centre, with Downing/Albrighton/McGeady on the wings?
If this does happen, any thoughts on whether it would work?

I think it could, certainly. There's no reason he has to be limited to playing on the wing although he is a superb winger

I would not want Young playing in the middle as a pair with Petrov.
Playing behind the striker would work with 2 centre midfielders behind him.

Young could certainly play as a striker - done it before. But I don't know if last night was a hint of things to come or more a case of no other strikers available; no Gabby, Delfouneso, Heskey or Weinmann. Carew was the only recognised striker there last night.
Wee Barry played as the lone striker for the last 20 mins!

My hobby horse, forget Keane, keep Milner, play 4-2-3-1 with Gabby up front (Carew & the Fonz to cover) Young behind with Downing & Milner on the wings (Albrighton & Bannan for cover) and two behind, Petrov and NRC. If we sell Milner then look to use funds on a winger (McGeady-although there must be better surely?) and a good holding midfield player - Parker? Is there any reason why the Fonz couldn't play in the Young position and cover him? I'm at the stage where I would much prefer to give him his chance now rather than buy Keane.

Personally I think we should sell Heskey. I usually (attempt) to stick up for him, but it's just not worked out and he should be moved on. Keane, Agbonlahor, Carew and Delfouneso would give us a great range of attacking options. I've always wanted to see Robbie Keane at Villa and think he could easily do a job for us for 2 or 3 seasons at least.
