I think this story went un-noticed. Ivor is also the oldest surviving former Villa player.

What a great bloke. Another thing that needs noting is that he was the first coach to guide a University team past the qualifying rounds of the FA Cup since the late 19th century when the likes of Oxford University regularly used to make it.

They went out in the first round to Mansfield T a few years ago IIRC.

I think as a 'thank you for services to football' he should be allowed to deliver that rollicking the England team so richly deserve.

When you hear about men like him and then see what the pinnacle of the English game produces, it really does show how far the game in this country is removed from it's roots.

I wish him a long and happy retirement!!

You do remember correctly. Although it's a bit of a misnomer to say that he 'guided' the team. He was only a member of the coaching staff - Ged Roddy was the head coach.

It was a belter of a match for which I did pitchside commentary for our local radio station.

Good times.

He is a remarkable man.   I saw most of his home games.  He was an elegant and tiny terrier who  could be compared a few generations later with Bobby Thomson and even later with a higher-skilled NR-K.   He`d fit nicely into a Milner shaped hole right about now.

Heh! Me too. I thought, Ivor Linton, he's only, what 50-ish, bit young to retire, unless you've made the sorts of fortunes from the game which didn't come along till after IL's day...
