I do wonder how their foreign stars will react to a having a more pragmatic English manager?

I like Hodgson as a manager but I hope it goes spectacularly wrong for him on Merseyside.

They could do far worse to be fair though. I'd take Murphy over Lucas any day of the week. :)

With the Liverpool job comes expectation.  This wasn't the case at Fulham where avoiding the drop is the managerial requirement.  Hodgson did this in some style which allowed the team to be more expressive as the pressure was never really there.  That's is not meant to decry Hodgson's achievements but to put it in the perspective that managing without that pressure is somewhat easier.  From the off, 4th spot will be the minimum requirement with a Liverpool squad possibly without Torres and Gerrard who could only take that squad to 7th last term.  It's a big ask when you see what Man City are setting out to do, what Spurs are trying to maintain and what we to a lesser extent want to be part of too.

It should be an interesting race for the top 4 next season!

I expect Liverpool to start well under Hodgson, as most clubs do with the lift a new man in charge brings, although whether they can maintain that will be the key for them.  Spurs have to balance the CL campaign for the first time and it remains to be seen if they can attract the better class of player they will now what/need.  Man City will be strong contenders again with all their money, whereas Man U don't seen to have anything to spend, so might be more vulnerable than usual.  Chelsea also need new blood as they're an aging side.  Arsenal are the only top 4 regular I'd be confident will be stronger than last season.

I can see it being quite open at the top in 2010/2011.

Don't they play in the Europa qualifying round before us?  If so I'd expect them to be back before we are!

Saying it's a huge job is correct, trying to return that shambles of a club to former glories is a Herculean task.  It doesn't mean it's the biggest club in football.

I like the way he got 'Englands most successful club' in there.

I thought he gave a sensible and very wise council during his first press interview, Liverpool fans won't understand what's going on. He avoided all the trick questions, I loved when asked about joining the biggest club in the world he tactfully mentioned he'd managed Milan and was still a close friend of their Chairman so it would be trite to say so, but Liverpool remained up there as as big a club, Nice one.

He also mentioned when asked if he expected to get first in the PL that he hopes he can, is glad Liverpool fans have such ambition but no sane manager would predict he'd guarantee it.

I'm glad I have as a Villa fan the same ambition and not just saying I'm happy with 6th because I know that's the best my current manager is likely to achieve.

I wish him luck but can't see it working while their ownership is in flux or even after .
