Then the Saturday after Liverpool came out at Villa Park wearing sunglasses and flip flops and we knew we were alright.

That is the only Villa game I ever thought there was something dubious about.

Any press links or footage of that? Would be brilliant to see.

They didn't really.

v Spartak Moscow  UEEFA  cup circa `83 ?

Thought we were on the up. Mark Walters was the 2nd coming of Cruyff,
and the UEEFA cup was in the bag.  By `88, had learned not to think.

It was so obvious. I bet most Liverpool players didnt even bother with the Clubs coach after the game they probably went straight to the Airport.

You might be mixing this up with the last day of the previous season - the Holte's last stand when we also beat Liverpool. In '95 though, this was the penultimate game of the season (last home game) and the following week Liverpool did manage to rouse themselves to beat Blackburn and very nearly put the kibosh on Rovers winning the title. Thankfully ManUre fecked-up at West Ham. We hobbled to a 1-1 draw at the already relegated Norwich. Four teams went down that season, we finished 3 points above fourth from bottom Palace. Interesting to note that Arsenal only finished 3 points above us.

As an aside, I think we played Liverpool in a post-season tournament in South Africa(?) in late May 1994 - maybe someone can confirm that.

We did play t hem in South Africa then - at Ellis Park IIRC - but the game in 1994 for the Holte's Last Stand was a lot more difficult than that of 12 months later.

Villa 0 Southampton 2, coldest I have ever been at a game. Snowed all game, nobody could stand up except for Matt "I Hate Villa" Le Tissier who scored two.

0-1 home to Sheffield Wednesday - when Les Sealey (God rest him) dived the ball over the line from Nigel Jemson.  George Courtney gave the goal despite being chased all round the pitch by Says Les.
