van der vaart is a cracking signing for spurs, if/when it happens.

And that's it.

Mission accomplished, Martin, you vindictive git.

If the board had thought it important to make signings then they'd have allowed Kevin to do it. Incidentally did you see MacDonald's interview where he said how O'Neill had called him before the West Ham game to talk about the scouting report he'd done on them. Strange way for a vindictive man to behave.
In the first interview Kevin said he called Martin and Martin gladly gave him the report over the phone.

Either way, he's gone and that's the most important thing as far as he's concerned. Time to move on.

It was on Sunday:

Quote
Asked how much O’Neill’s exit had damaged the club, MacDonald replied: “When you say ‘damage’, we have won one and lost one.

“It probably hasn’t helped the football club, but the players have to help themselves.

“When we played West Ham he had done a scouting report the previous week and he phoned me up. So if you are saying he left the club in the lurch he was still showing the club he has got heart then.

“Whether it was trying to help me out or trying to show the club that – I think it was probably a bit of both.

“He could have quite easily walked away and not bothered phoning. That’s why I find it difficult for people to say that.”

What an altruistic gesture.

It almost makes up for fucking off with his entire coaching staff five days before the start of the season, and causing the predictable fuck up where we've signed nobody (until he went, we were probably waiting for him to finally look at the calendar and realise the window was shutting soon, before slowly grinding into action, as we usually were).

He couldn't have picked a more damaging thing to do, at a more damaging time. If that's not vindictive, then I don't know what is.

It leads to the situation we've just had, where the club either don't want to sign players without a manager in place, or where it is difficult to do so, because we're effectively starting from scratch a few weeks before the end of the window.

I don't buy it being anything but a move designed to fuck us up. I'm sure we all have different opinions on the level of trouble it has caused us, but the one thing which is a cast iron fact is that he went when he did, and he took almost the entire coaching staff with him, too.

Far from it being time to forget about it, I think we're only just starting to feel the impact of it, and today was a key date, with the transfer window closing.

First of all, regarding taking the coaching staff with him, i think you'll find they would'nt have stayed anyway, they were a team and always have been wherever MON has managed. When Brian Little walked out on Leicester to join us, he took Alan Evans and John Gregory with him. It happens and to our benefit in the past.

As for forgeting about it, i'm afraid we'll have to.  Reminding us what a bad boy MON has been is really not going to get us anywhere. It's time to move on.

I'll take Kevin Mac Donald's word as he's slightly better placed to judge than you, Paulie.

As for the "taking" his coaching staff with him - what did he do pack them up in a hold all. If the club had wanted to keep them I'm sure they could have tried.

He walked out, that was the wrong thing to do but the rest is just gobbing off by people who have no idea what happened.

That's not the point.

He left, the coaching staff left. Whether that's the norm or not, we were still without anyone to do our coaching on the eve of the season.

You can forget if you want, I'm going to rage for a bit longer yet if that's all the same.

Where are the bits that we don't know about?

He went. He went when he did. So did his staff. We're left in a mess.

Whatever else happened, those are facts, and those are the prime facts which have led to our state of disarray.

Incidentally, Chris, I can't help notice how your willingness to take KM's word on something contrasts with your unwillingness to take the word of the board on just about anything for the last few weeks - primarily over the circumstances regarding MON's departure.

Fine Paulie, you sit their and gnash your teeth if it helps. I prefer to look forward because at the end of the day, there's not a great deal else the club can do.

You're right on that, there isn't much they can do at the moment (which I believe was probably his intention). That's what makes it so annoying.

Anyone who thinks that the effects of what he did are now going to recede is kidding themselves. We haven't even started feeling the true effects yet.

Paulie: Well said. Telling it like it is.

Whatever the unknown issues, there is simply no excuse for creating the damage he did by using the window as a bargaining tool. I for one am glad that, notwithstanding the possible "crisis", his bluff was called and the club took the position, to paraphrase the first statement from the club via the General, that- no man is bigger than the club. Some thought they were.

The fact is that K Mac was left alone and whatever blame can be applied to him, for whatever reason for the (two) poor results he was simply undermanned as MON took his entire team with him.

I also think that MON/Robertson used the power he/they thought they had to blackmail us. Clough wannabes. Without the ability, or as is becoming obvious - the respect of the players. Good riddance.

The board haven't told us the circumstances of MON's departure so I am in no position to either take or refute their word. Randy said that they no longer shared the same vision and that was about it. The General had a few digs but categorically did not explain anything. What we think we know is pure speculation and is fuelled by the very vindictivness you accuse the manager of.

As Clampy says, there is absolutely nothing to be gained by it.

We've won 2 out of 3 in the league. We went out of Europe yes, but we did at the same stage last season too.

Martin left because he wasnt allowed to sign anyone for whatever reason, so had he stayed we would still be in the same position today having not signed anyone. If anything, Martin leaving probably gave us a better chance of signing someone before the window shut.

He reckons he was going to Bayern for £18m yesterday but when that fell through he got a deal for £8m.
Honest Henry must have one hell of a large brown paper bag to convince the Bayern deal to fall apart and then become available at that price. An absolute steal.

The thing is Paulie, if MON had sold 3 or 4 players and then buggered off, then i'd understand the anger towards him a lot more. That's not happened. The timing was terrible but whoever takes over still has a very very good squad of players to work with.

You may well be right, a few months down the line, we might see the damage, but until then, it's best to see what happens. We're in limbo, but it's not a crisis.
