I'd love it if Randy came back from Milan with Flamini.

I wouldn't, I'd like some creativity please, we don't need yet another defensive midfielder.

We have Young, Downing, Albrighton and now Ireland, and only Petrov and NRC (for a third of the time as viable defensive options. Besides, Flamini isn't solely defensive, he's a good continuity player in there, good at quick passing, and can even fill in at full back like we'd miss with Milner going.

Flamini ran the show for Arsenal until Carew sent him into the upper Trinity and ended his afternoon. He'd be solid upgrade on Petrov who isn't going to last forever.

We're about to sign Ireland and Ashley seems to have his arrogance back. I think we're OK in that regard at the moment.

Now we need to find the next Drogba...

We don't have a proper defensive midfielder on our books do we? Apart from Reo-Coker. Attacking wise we have Downing, Albrighton, Ashley Young, Stephen Ireland. You want more?

I think they're similar players but would do well together. Same goes for Delph, who I see as the long-term Petrov replacement.

Delph won't be a replacement for Petrov. Delph is an attacking CM

Absolutely. Petrov is aging and for me lacks enough bite. I'd go as far as to say we desperately need a defensive midfielder. Ireland will fill the creative void and even then we have the three wingers to create as well.

So was Petrov. I don't see it as a case of either of them being Makeleles, but more rounded midfielders, whose main role is to be good at keeping and spreading possession. In a system where we hope to have more of the ball, we don't need an out-and-out holder. It's a waste of a position.

Holding midfielders are only really used at the highest level, they're often passengers in the Premier League now.

Of last seasons top 6 only Chelsea and arguably Citeh (although De Jong doesn't exactly sit) used them most weeks. And even Chelsea have just signed Ramires to replace Mikel...

It's in the Champions League where they have their worth IMO.

The away draw is of good value in Europe so a screening player has his worth, but in the Premier League, I am of the mind that Aston Villa can go anywhere and beat anybody. I think the same goes for everybody from Chelsea down to Everton, based on last year’s finishes, so for me, you don't need a specialist player to shield the defence and pass it five yards to better players.

Ramires is a much more attacking player than Mikel. He's more of a Ballack replacement if anything.

When I say defensive midfielder I mean not a guy like Toure I mean a guy like a Reo-Coker with a bit more ability or a Petrov with more bite. He won't stand in the centre circle a la Viera and spray passes and foul tackles but would still fulfill a largely defensive role.

Fresh air could have replaced Ballack.

They say the greatest trick ever played was the devil convincing the world he didn't exist, but I’m fairly sure the greatest trick ever played was Michael Ballack getting £120 grand per week to do absolutely nothing for Chelsea.
