After last night, which I personally didn't take many positives out of, any player who can help us have a better edge up front is alright by me. Not that I had a problem with Keane signing in the first place, if he does.

If Gabby and Ashley are going to improve they need an experienced player with good technical ability to play alongside.  One of the few players that seems to fit the bill is Keane.

People talk about his age and average goal contribution, together with how much it will cost us over the term of his contract but if he can take Gabby and Ashley up a notch as the learn about things like movement from him, the cost will be well worth it.

Carew is a good individual player but he doesn't bring other players into the game as much as somebody like Keane.

It's good, unless sex abusers are the subject of the conversation. Then it's not good.

Reo-Coker is sick.

He's like Kaka without the skills, his hop skip and a jump whilst running with the ball at lethal speed then being brought down in the box against Liverpool... that's what he can offer. His engine is just as good as good as Milner's, and offers that bit of steel and crunch we're going to need in midfield now that Milner will be leaving.

Petrov gets too tired and weary too quickly and doesn't really offer any drive going foward with 20+ minutes to go. I'd prefer it if Reo-Kaka played instead of Petrov tbh; Ireland + Reo-Kaka would be a deadly partnership.

This is why I love the British media. This from the Daily Express:

Quote
ASTON VILLA HOME IN ON AIDEN MCGEADY

ASTON VILLA will swoop for Celtic’s Aiden McGeady when the sale of James Milner to Manchester City goes through.
Villa manager Martin O’Neill has resigned himself to losing Milner to his big-spending rivals and expects the move to be completed inside the next 24 hours.

The money generated from that, believed to be around £25million, will allow him to target McGeady.
And that will suit the Parkhead winger down to the ground. He has been stalling on a £10m move to Spartak Moscow since his recent visit to the Russian capital and although the terms on offer would have netted him close to £10m over three years, his preferred option has always been in England.

Now he will pray Villa do move quickly to offload Milner so he can be in place in the Midlands for the start of the season.

And this from the Scotsman:

Quote
McGeady's Villa hopes are dashed

ANY hopes Aiden McGeady had of moving to England rather than Moscow appeared to evaporate last night when Aston Villa ruled out a move for the Celtic winger.

Villa are close to completing a deal to sell England midfielder James Milner to Manchester City but any prospect of some of the money being used to finance a move for McGeady has been scotched.

"We'd love to have done a deal but it's just not possible at this time," said a Villa source.

The structuring of the proposed Milner transfer, believed to be worth £27m once the value attached to makeweight Stephen Ireland is included, is believed to preclude Villa manager Martin O'Neill going for a player he gave his senior debut to at Celtic and whom he recently talked up as being good enough for the English Premier League.

It leaves Spartak Moscow as McGeady's only option as he seeks a move away from Celtic Park. The Russian club are now seeking an immediate response on their £9.5m offer for the 24-year-old who was in Moscow earlier this week for a look around the club and the city.

I'm more inclined to believe the Scotsman myself, as I don't know about its track record whereas that of the Express is not a good one, but then again I do want the Scotsman to be right as, frankly, McGeady is the last thing we need.

Me too Monty. I like the direct quote in your story. There is also this below from The Herald Scotland (which is a different paper, with different publishers right...?), which includes believable details of the Milner deal:

Quote
Aiden McGeady’s hopes of moving to the Barclays Premier League with Aston Villa appear to be over.

It is understood that Martin O’Neill, who gave the player his Celtic debut in 2004, will not be pursuing his long-standing interest in him.

Villa are on the verge of completing the sale of James Milner to Manchester City, with the deal thought to be worth £27.5 million. Around £15m will be paid up front, another £5m in add-ons, and Stephen Ireland will move to Villa Park in exchange.

Although it was expected that as soon as Milner was sold, McGeady would move to Villa, it now seems that the deal will not happen. This leaves Spartak Moscow as the only club to make a bid, of £9m, for the Republic of Ireland international.

McGeady spent several days in Moscow last week with his girlfriend and the 24-year-old is thought to regard the potential move to a new country as exciting, where once his only interest was in joining an English Premier League side.

Spartak have reportedly offered the winger a four-year contract worth £60,000 a week.

Neil Lennon, the Celtic manager, and the club, are known to be keen to sell McGeady in order to recoup transfer funds, while the player is looking for a new challenge. The collapse of his potential move to Villa is a setback, though.

The capture of Ireland will provide O’Neill’s team with the additional creativity he is seeking and although other transfer moves might be possible once the wage bill is reduced, with Luke Young and Steve Sidwell both available, it seems that McGeady’s hopes of moving to the Midlands have been ended.

Young wants to go to Spurs!!
« Reply #8469 on: August 08, 2010, 09:43:23 AM »
hope this is utter bullshit but thought i should post it....

ASHLEY YOUNG will move a step closer to joining Tottenham this week if they can offer him an increase on his £65,000-a-week wages.

The Aston Villa winger was the subject of two failed bids from Harry Redknapp last summer and was given a £9,000-a-week rise for staying at Villa Park.

Young, 25, has now indicated that he is keen on a move to White Hart Lane but the salary he earns at the Midlands club is not far off Spurs' wage limit.

To offer a substantial rise the North London club would need to pay around £80,000-a-week which would put him on par with top earner Luka Modric.

Young wants to move back to London after three and a half years at Villa and is attracted by the Champions League football Spurs are able to offer next season.

He was bitterly disappointed to be left out of England's World Cup squad after not even making Fabio Capello's provisional 30-man list.

Redknapp offered £19million 12 months ago and then £21m a fortnight later.

The two clubs are set to agree a similar fee this time round.

The Tottenham boss made Young his prime target this summer and confirmed his interest in the former Watford winger last week.

Villa want to balance their books but are also interested in a part-exchange deal involving Robbie Keane, who has been told he can leave Spurs.

Manager Martin O'Neill will lose James Milner to Manchester City this week and will use some of the £25million fee to tempt City into parting with Stephen Ireland.
