The Hammers have offered the 29-year-old a new contract worth £20million over five years as proof that they intend to build their future around him

80k a week for five years, for a player who will be 34 at the end?

Total bullshit I think.

Does anyone have the quotes from Luke Young, questioning O'Neill's decision to play a weakened team against Moscow. Or have I just made that up?

I wouldn't worry if you have - people make stuff up on here all the time!

Yeah, some do.

But:

Quote
O'Neill's actions mirror those of Bolton boss Gary Megson last season who decided, albeit at a much later stage of the competition, that he would also rest his the majority of his first-team.
However, that backfired on the Trotters' chief as his team lost out to Sporting Lisbon, only to return home and suffer defeat against Wigan a few days later.
The news is not going to be treated with joy by Villa's 1,900 travelling supporters who have dug deep in a credit crunch and will brave sub-zero temperatures to watch a shadow squad go through the paces against Zico's side.
O'Neill has named weaker teams earlier in the competition, against MSK Zilina and Hamburg - both matches were lost - but the difference was that Villa had already qualified for the knock-out stages.

It seems even his own players can not see the logic. Speaking after Saturday's defeat, Luke Young said: 'I'm not sure how the manager views it, but I think  the lads feel it is a waste of time putting all the effort in on Wednesday if we are not going to go over there to and try and finish the job.

"There's no point coming in earlier for pre-season and start playing the games early in July to get to this stage and then you don't go and have a go at it."

Which team in the top 8 would he get into?

O'Neill only sticks with him cuz he parted with £8M for him. He is just not good enough. He gets away with it in a 4-5-1 but is shown up for what he is in a 4-4-2.

No one said he would.

I'd say that he would and then some.

Whilst the likes of Carrick, Lucas, Mascherano, Denilson, Mikel and Neville are regularly playing that position in the Top 8 midfields then there would be comfortably room for Petrov.

He's certainly not going to be able to carry on forever and we need to start phasing him out due to his age. However he has been one of our most important players for nigh on two seasons now.

Sol Campbell has signed for Newcastle. So they'll have to pick their best two Centre Backs out of Campbell, Coloccini and Taylor. They are doomed!

Boateng and Kompany are far better than Toure and Lescott

How the mighty have fallen! Bet that twat off SSN who always used to be camped outside St James Park waiting for the next Messiah signing wasn't around for this one. Amazing but very pleasing just how far they have gone off the radar. A few years ago, Newcastle getting promoted and the next big signing would have been wall to wall in the media...

Are they? I dont know about that. At best they're more of the same.
One hasn't even kicked a ball in the league yet.

Ah yes, but Toure and Lescott have played in the Premier League, so that must mean that they're miles ahead of the two other unknown chancers that have just been blessed to start their careers in the best league in the world, sorry, THE BEST LEAGUE IN THE WORLD.

Nor indeed poor James - not sure who he would displace from that midfield if his move actually goes through.  Maybe he'll just replace Barry on the bench after Barry joins uncle Woy at Liverpool?
