The issue for me is that I don't really think we can compete with at least two of them. Liverpool have two players beyond our wildest dreams in terms of quality and Man City have a level of finance beyond our wildest dreams. We finished above Liverpool last year because they suffered injuries and underperformed. I'm pretty sure they'll be above us this coming season. Man City conversely I'd back to finish above us but I'm not absolutely certain especially if they sign Balotelli who with his reputation could turn out to be a trojan horse and if some new players come in, their manager gets sacked etc. Tottenham have a much better team and squad than we do as well as ECL football but I think a campaign might distract them and so they might be below us.

Now, if we bring in a few players who strengthen us in key positions I think we can challenge. A striker, two midfielders, a right back and some full back cover are the maximum of what we need. Ultimately, I do suspect we won't get all of these and maybe that plus some other limitations are holding us back.

Depressing though it is sixth or seventh is where we're at. Anything below that where we're against clubs with less finance then it's a failure above and it's a success. That said if we win a cup then I'll accept anything in terms of position bar getting relegated.

Not sure I fully agree.  Provided we strenghten were we need to, I'd put it in two categories:-
Teams that WILL finish above us - Man U and Chelsea.
Team that SHOULD finish above us - Man City and Arsenal.

I think we can compete with the rest, including Liverpool.  But as I said, this is presuming we can strengthen as we need to.

I really don't buy that liverpool are better than us.  Gerrard is a good player as is Torres but beyond that I think we've got a better side, if Torres leaves them I really think they'll struggle to match last season.

Man City are playing fantasy football so no one can compete with them but I don't think they'll do as well as a lot of people think as I'm expecting quite a bit of unrest there this year.

Tottenham I agree will be a bit distracted by europe.

I don't think it'll be significantly more difficult to get top4 this year than it was last.

I did say if we strengthen in the key places (foremost upfront and in midfield) we can be more competitive.

I just suspect and perhaps I shouldn't that we won't strengthen enough.

The reason Liverpool are better than us is that they have two great players. If they just had Lucas, Insua and Ngog type players then we wouldn't have any trouble finishing above them.

Nobody can compete with Man City in finance. The football side of things might prove differently.

Two great players they had last year who underperformed.  I'd wonder wether Torres' heart still in it?

I think top 3 man u, Chelsea and man city while arsenal should be 4th- I see Us in the scrap with Liverpool spurs and everton for 5th to 8th.

Liverpool should really finish above us as it stands and I'd expect us spurs and everton to be pretty close to each other, spurs champions league may handicap them a bit- if I had to bet on it I'd say 7th for us .

I fancy us against any team in the prem now, i did'nt 3/4 years ago, but i expect us not to lose in every game.
Where we lack is having a stonger squad.

Next year will be a great opportunity, Ure/Chelsk/Lplop are certainly no better than last year, Citeh will be in a development season, and who knows about Arse and Spuds.

I think we need to sell Milner, and get at least 3 players in with the money, and if we sell any more then at least 1 more quality player.

According to the Mirror SWP is being offered as a make weight in the Milner deal
Fuck that off, I don't rate him and not only that I think were ok for wingers. A really class Midfielder is what we need

I go as far to say that this is one of MoN most important summers. He has improved us year on year which is fine but this year I see our three biggest rivals - Spurs, Citeh and Liverpool - making large steps forward in either personnel or performance in comparison to last year. This being said, we need to make significant improvements as well. It looks like Milner is off which is a massive shame because I think with some shrewd business and getting rid of some of the dead wood - especially those on the higher wages - we could make some good buys.

In a perfect world:
sell:
Heskey - 2million
Sidwell - 3million
Shorey - 2.5million
Davies - 7million
Beye - 500,000
+ Harewood and Freddie released
Total: 15million

buy: Ireland - 8million
Keane - 6million
Flamini - 4million
Hleb -6million
van der wiel - 8million

This could be compensated with sale of Milner for 25million if Randy isn't prepared to put any money into the team. If that was our transfer policy this summer I would be extatic.

In reality. Milner will leave. Onuoha and Keane will arrive
Sidwell, Shorey will also leave (maybe Davies for Keane as well)

MoN simply will not do this summer what is required of him. He has a difficult job, as does eeveryone , especially when Citeh haven't finished spending yet but he needs his best transfer window yet and with eminantly winnable games in the first handful we do need these signings in sooner rather than later.

Depends how much they value him at, if it's £20m + SWP it wouldn't be bad at all. At least it would be proper competition for that dope Downing, god knows he needs it.

What worries me is that SWP could be a replacement for Young, 'Arry would like to take Ash off our hands in a second. Milner going to City, SWP coming the other way plus some cash. Ash going to Hot Spurt, Keane coming here plus a few quid. And a MON getting in a midfielder (Parker). It was odd that a story in the Mirror ie. MON walking if Young is sold, starts to appear. Thats my bored surmising on this unfounded paper bullshite.
Would not be happy if that was to transpire in real life.
