Richard Dunne is quoted in today's Mail saying that

'We should have 2 new players in by the end of August.'

I'd put Ireland in the 'on the cusp of being quite good' categary.

A good Manager would make him an excellent player ..... I think he needs a good man Manager to get him to play well week in, week out.

He certainly has the abillity from what I've seen of him -- box to box - great shot on him, great vision.....

Could it be a case of setting relatively modest expectations, so that when 4-5 players rock up it's more than we anticipated?

Dunne might know about one or two moves afoot for the Irish lads, which would be natural enough. I'm not sure he's privy to all our transfer dealings though.

I doubt Richard Dunnie is privy to all the goings on behind the scenes. If he knows two are on the way, its probably because he knows them personally.
Cuz de're Oirish!

And he said by the end of August, not at the end of August.

Stop freaking out at everything for the love of christ. Its like being in a fucking chicken coop.

Hmmm... It seems the story about McGeady going to Spartak was another load of old arse.

That said links to the headless chicken make him look tempting.

Think if Milner left we'd still have improved, but considering the improvements Liverpool and Citeh have made and Spurs being better than us anyway, I'm not sure it's enough.

We're so close it's frustrating. Wins against Wolves, Sunderland and West Ham at home, would have seen us on equal points with Spurs.

The players that would make the difference (Keane, Hleb, Ireland, Flamini) are there. Why can't we show the ambition to go and get them!?

I've a small hope that Luke Young has been persuaded to stay.  Not based on anything other than possibly O'Neill realsing that he's got more pressing players to move on.

The issue for me is that I don't really think we can compete with at least two of them. Liverpool have two players beyond our wildest dreams in terms of quality and Man City have a level of finance beyond our wildest dreams. We finished above Liverpool last year because they suffered injuries and underperformed. I'm pretty sure they'll be above us this coming season. Man City conversely I'd back to finish above us but I'm not absolutely certain especially if they sign Balotelli who with his reputation could turn out to be a trojan horse and if some new players come in, their manager gets sacked etc. Tottenham have a much better team and squad than we do as well as ECL football but I think a campaign might distract them and so they might be below us.

Now, if we bring in a few players who strengthen us in key positions I think we can challenge. A striker, two midfielders, a right back and some full back cover are the maximum of what we need. Ultimately, I do suspect we won't get all of these and maybe that plus some other limitations are holding us back.

Depressing though it is sixth or seventh is where we're at. Anything below that where we're against clubs with less finance then it's a failure above and it's a success. That said if we win a cup then I'll accept anything in terms of position bar getting relegated.

EDIT: I see JJ editted his post. On his last two lines I agree. We need guys like Flamini and Hleb but I don't think we'll go out and get them I just don't think the manager for whatever reason will go for them.
