On Saturday The Times had a list of all the Premier clubs and who'd they signed.
Only one club hadn't signed anybody at all.

"And who was that?" He asked naively.

Sandro from Internacional.

The deal was confirmed during the season, but he only joined in the off season.

Bear in mind that at the end of what I think is going to be a very testing season financially for all clubs, it might be worth looking at the list of those in trouble money wise. A list showing quantities of signings means diddly squat on its own...

Scott Parker is very much like Keane - not first choice, but makes a lot of sense and would improve us, so long as the price reflects the player's age.

Sandro from Internacional....

I thought that was 'Arry's wife who, IIRC, is a better goal scorer than Bent

For what they'd want i'd say he was too old. Gotta be a younger better option.

Agreed Greg.

If he was an old-style midfield general, someone who could just sit deep and dictate play, his age wouldn't be as much of a factor. But he still sees himself as a box to box midfielder, and is still at his best when driving forward and forcing the play. That type of game has a limited shelf life, and he's coming close to the latter stages of his career.

Was keen on this last Jan before the Porn Barons rocked up, as I thought we might get him for a song. He might still be a useful option at the right price, and might be capable of having an Andy Townsend-style impact for us. Even if it is only for 3-4 years (which lets face it, would be long service material for pretty much any footballer these days regardless of age).

But I'd be concerned with the average age of the squad if this one goes through. Friedel, L.Young (for the time being at least) Cuellar, Dunne, Warnock, Petrov, Parker, Carew, Heskey. And possibly Keane to add to that.  That would be a large chunk of our starting XI who will be at least 29 at some point this season. Chelsea might have got away with it, but -lets face it- Cuellar and the like don't really compare to with their lot.

There is probably a better than average chance that MON won't be at the club in 12 months, for one reason or another. You can hear it now if a new manager rocks up: "The first thing I had to do was get the age of the squad down. They're far too old." And so on.

Although I agree we need to watch the age, I don't think it's a problem right now.  You include Parker, and fair enough you're responding to a post about him, but other runoured signings are relative youngsters like McGeady, Ireland and Onouha/Richards.  Even with Keane aswell, those 5 would have a decent average age.  We've also got Gabby, Downing and Ash, plus our own emerging youth, so although it needs to be paid attention to, I don't think our average age is a problem.

We'd still have a lower avreage age than the current champions. I think a mixture of youth and experience is ideal. I'm much more interested in the ability of new signings than their age.

It needs to be both, Chris.

I think we're fine now, which makes sense as the manager has bought a mixture of youth and experience, which as you say is ideal.  But when signings players age is a concern, and should be reflected in their price, as we have to think longterm and need to understsnd who's coming in to 'do a job' and who we are building for the future with.
