True, but using your own measure, the question is whether we were sufficiently "closer".

09-10 - 6th - 64 points
08-09 - 6th - 62 points
07-08 - 6th - 60 points

By one measure (position) it is not improvement. By another measure (points) it is, but that rate of improvement doesn't really look sufficient to suggest we're going to break the top four any time soon.

I think we've reached a level where the increase in points becomes harder, so the above doesn't surprise me.  We need a 'quantum leap' to bridge the gap that currently exists, although where and how we're going to get that I do not know.

The "quantum leap" required is a goal scorer. Take Heskeys 5 goals and change that into 15-20 and there you have it ............

There is no doubt we were well and trulely in the running for fourth during the 08/09 season until the collapse with about ten games to go: that Stoke game was the killer.
Last season we were always chasing and when we were there had played more games.
In the running for fourth, 08/09 was a far better season. We looked as if we could actually do it. Last year we didn't.

i fear harrys possibly decided to go for huntelaar and therefore hurried up the keane deal, as much as i would like keane i feel huntelaar would offer more goals .

I don't know if Harry is after Huntelaar or not, but I'd agree that he would be a better option for us than Keane.

My only worry about Huntlelaar is that other than his own country, he dose'nt seem to have hacked it anywhere else, so it's not saying he'll hack it in the Prem either.

This was discussed when he was linked originally, but his record for Madrid and Milan was actually quite good on a goals to games ratio, it was just that be could never hold down a regular place.

It's hard to judge any player's record when they've had a short spell at Real Madrid, that club is such a circus.

carew on his day is a good player no doubt , but he does seem a little disinterested at times and plays with that appraoch , and then other times when hes up 4 it he plays like a totally different player.

maybe hes a player who needs a kick up the arse now an again to get him going.

I think that's fair comment.

I do too. On his day, he's genuinely unplayable. I'm just more than concerned that those days seem fewer, and further apart.

Dunno about that, like I said, 17 in 42 is a decent record still, and he struggled with, errm, "injury" a bit last season.

Or was that the season before? I dunno.

The goals argue a case but five of those were against Vienna, Palace, and Reading in the cups, and despite them on many occaions I felt we played much better as a team when Heskey was up with Gabby, we just then had a chronic lack of goal threat.

If we can just find someone who can combine the talents of both to a decent degree we'll win a lot more games.

again if your in a race and in the top 3 or 4 for a lot it but fall away to 6th, its more impressive than running in at the end and getting 6th in a slightly better time

Just moving those positions up a bit to make a comparison, if a runner is 2nd for most of the race and ends up 4th, you'd give him the bronze over the bloke that did finish 3rd because he was there all race and did nothing else?

now you're being daft. if you look at paulie's stats, in 08/09 all we needed to do by game 28 was show an average level of performance to get 4th, but we couldn't even manage that. we were never in that position last season

well im off to pick up daughter from bham airport, intriguing chat on here  today but still nothing on the transfer front officially-starting to feel very frustrated by the lack of action although we should be used to it by now.

hardly. your example had nowt to do with what i was saying. For a start how is finishing 6th twice comparable with finishing 3rd and 4th.? you're just so desperate to prove last season was the bestest evoh in some misguided cheerleading attempt, that your prepared to ignore MON best season. A shame really.

We were in a better position in 08/09, I wouldn't deny that.  In part I think that was because it was a two horse race between us an Arsenal, where as last season there were 4 clubs in contention so it was more of an up and down experience.  Yet despite that we were still closer after 38 games.

And you know your argument is crap, so are attempting to drag me into a slanging match with the old 'cheerleading' gambit.  Won't work.

Your contention is that being in a great position part way through a race is more important than where you finish said race.  Which quite frankly I think is laughable.

Sorry - I meant to say 'larfable'.
