I hope I'm wrong and were just playing our cards close to our chest however I do believe their is no smoke without fire

I think the whole thing is overplayed.

Most clubs will have a limit to how many players they can sustain at one one time, we're probably around our upper level now so we will naturally have to let a few go if we want to bring in others. You can't just keep adding numbers each season.

Correct. Sell before you buy dose'nt just mean bringing in transfer money to enable you to purchase someone else (which of course helps) but more often than not, it means getting people off the wage bill before you add to it.

Indeed.

I'm genuinely surprised at the way so many people have bought into the other interpretation of it - nothing the chairman has done or said thus far has suggested that was how it would be.

What percentage of our fan base would be happy if Randy went over to Holland and brought back a handsome, 20yr old with a fancy name? Even if he couldn't kick a ball.

If the rumours in the paper are anything to go by MON only has himself to blame for wasting so much money on players he now deems aren't good enough. I don't blame Lerner in the slightest if he has decided to tell MON he has to generate his own funds.

No, and I think most of realise that we now have a squad which is a little top-heavy in terms of well-paid, well-known players who don't feature much and therefore needs to move on. As others have said, it's as much about numbers of players and money. We've already shifted Gardner, Harewood, Marshall and Bouma from last season's squad.

The other thing to remember all this 'sell to buy' stuff is that football clubs don't always operate like 'get cash in for X player and then use said cash for Y player'. Deals are structured over a period of time - an £8m transfer doesn't see all £8m paid immediately. So, I don't see why MON would be prevented from setting up deals before players are sold.

BTW, does anyone know what's happening with Salifou? He's been released, surely?

This lot aren't wanted by Man City according to The Guardian: Robinho, Roque Santa Cruz, Stephen Ireland, Micah Richards and Craig Bellamy.
They would do nicely, I think.

Yep. I'd take them all thanks very much. Seriously though,  these clubs , ( Chelsea, Man City etc), selling their souls to the mighty dollar is getting a bit sad. It's a bit like cheating at monopoly surely, I'ts fun for a while then it all becomes a bit pointless and less fun for everyone. I'll be really happy when the mega rich clubs fuck off and form their own league that I can happily ignore and go back to following Aston Villa without the constant
feeling that unless we're buying squillion pound mega-stars then we're shite. Sorry, a bit pissed and gone off topic

Of the 5 that Man City are letting go:

Ireland - Definately worth a shot, great signing if we go for him
Richards - Showed a lot of potential but hasn't progressed but worth a shout for around 5m or less
Bellamy - Decent player but nothing special and an obnoxious little oik to boot, not for me
Santa Cruz - 1 great season with Blackburn, mediocre for the rest of his career, injury prone to boot - avoid for me
Robinho - If any english club goes for him the entire staff involved in the transfer should be rounded up and shot

As we're off-topic. I can never really see this as a runner as the football industry doesn't follow your normal business rules, in that each entity needs it's competitors for it's survival, i.e. no competitors, no league, no revenue.

I also believe that the sugar daddies will be involved in the league until UEFA, or FIFA, or whoever runs the show, says that if a club has X amount of debt, then they cannot be going around spunking millions on players. Level the playing field, I say!

I concur, Paul E. Ireland is a class act, Richards has the raw ability and just needs to be nurtured and encouraged and is worth considering. The other three I'd steer well clear of.

I'd consider RSC on a free and reasonable wages, but that's it.

Considerably smaller than that which wishes the manager would not shop almost exclusively for players already playing in the UK - ie just choose players from the largest pool available to us.

We don't need a 20-year-old Dutchman with a fancy name, anyway... we've already got the brilliantly-named Arsenio Halfhuid, and he's 18!

There's be at leat 23 people on here who'd tell you he was brilliant and just what we needed. Even when it was discovered that he was an unemployed windmill operative with only one leg they'd still swear blind they'd watched him score a hat trick on ESPN.

He should be in Beverley Hills 90210 with a name like that.

Which also probably means that although he looks 19, he's actually 35

We're going to sign somebody in the next 24 hours. I can feel it in my waters.

I agree. If not that quickly it will be before the end of the week.

I think it will be Robbie Keane.

That would be a good start! Can you imagine a side with Richard Dunne, Aidan McGeady, Stephen Ireland and Robbie Keane?!

Oh....
