I can see the value of having taller players at the back, but I can't really say that see the point of it in the middle of the pitch. Petrov is a superb defensive midfielder, tackling cleanly, intercepting constantly, almost never losing the ball and following up as the last man forward a lot of the time. He's also one of the best at winning free kicks around. He doesn't really need size.

Agree completely. For 70 minutes anyway. We need someone to take the pressure off Stan, to let him do all that with a bit less need for running around so much. He's always lasted the distance better in a 3 man mid, I know that.

Definitely, Tom, in the three man midfield there's no need for Stan to run so much.

Honestly, the 4-3-3 is so blatantly the best way forward for us it does begger belief that he doesn't play it.

Yeah I agree with you both, if Petrovs job was to patrol the middle third, break up play and get it restarted via the attacking CM's he would probably last out the whole game and for a good 2 or 3 seasons more too!

Just seen on SSN that Artur Boruc is to join Fiorentina from Celtic...so is Sebastian Frey on the move somewhere?

According to those in the know, we are after Swiss winger Tranquillo Barnetta...I'd be hugely in favour - always played well when I've seen him

He's two footed and looks like a decent player.

He should be in Beverley Hills 90210 with a name like that. B6 may have to suffice.

Barnetta's good. Would push Downing. Not a patch on Ash on song mind. But saying that, I wouldn't want to be replacing Ashley anyway.

I think we should play 4-3-3 but I can understand why MON doesn't play it. Goals do become an issue with our players in a 4-3-3, Gabby will get 15 a season, Ash and Jimmy ten each and not much from the rest. By putting Carew into the line up and taking out Reo Coker you will get an extra 15 goals over the season. What we need to sort out is where the goals will come from if we play 4-3-3.

MON made a comment on the OS last week on how 4-5-1/4-3-3 seems to be the way forward after watching the World Cup.

It's a worry I also share!

The other thing is that when Gabby does play as a lone striker, he doesn't seem to score as much, although he does do great work for the side.  I don't have any stats to back this up - it's just my feeling about it.

If you drop Gabby to say 10 and also get 10 from Ash and Milner, or more likely Ireland replacing him, then I think whoever comes in on the right of the front three needs to be getting double figures also.  That's 40, so you would hope for the rest to chip in to get to the 60 or so 4th place would likely require.

From the BBC Gossip page:-

Celtic insist that winger Aiden McGeady's failure to travel to the United States was because of a thigh strain and not a pending transfer. (Daily Express)

Doesn't mean it's to us, but it looks like the player is leaving Celtic!
