i'm sure there's interest, but at the right price. if you're say nrc faced with  a year of 30+k a week and then negotiating your own deal with the would be transfer fee going into your pocket you'd probably wait, rather than join a bolton on 25k a week now

I think that's exactly what NRC will do, not sure about the others.

I think NRC's position is different and he's likely to stay.  And with Delph injured, I'd be quite glad if he did.

Yeah... Sidwell might fancy West Ham too. But if Forest are the only side who want Shorey you could understand him staying put and biding his time.

Personally, I want Luke, Reo-Coker and Davies to stay, and Shorey, Beye and Sidwell to go!

I'd agree with that, with the slight change that I also would allow Davies to go as we're OK for CBs and have Clark emerging also.

What's become clear in this World Cup is that those teams willing to move from a rigid 4-4-2 to playing three in midfield, or two central midfield players with three more attacking players in front and one centre-forward, have tended to prosper. I think it's the way forward for us, too: have preferred us over the last two seasons playing this 4-3-3/4-5-1 hybrid.

Say no players come in or out, this is how we'd line-up best in that area IMO:

                                       NRC           Petrov

                     Young             Milner             Downing

                                           Gabby

You could switch Young and Milner over.... if Milner goes then Ireland could be a perfect replacement as that attacking CM... when fit, Delph can challenge for a place...

With our existing squad, I would agree that would be the best way to line up in midfield. 4-4-2 doesn't really suit the players we have and you probably should try to have a system that wll fit your players.

Although I like the side Merv suggested and the 4-2-3-1 formation in general, it doesn't get Carew on the pitch, which greatly reduces our goal threat.

Yer the problem with that is goals, Reo Coker, Petrov and Downing offer almost no goal threat, Ash, Milner and Gabby's highest ever totals for us are 9, 10 and 16 respectively, which is nowhere near enough for top 4.  It is the right system but would need 2 or 3 replacements to really work imo.  With our current squad Carew has to start instead of nrc imo for his goals.

Seems uncle Woy going has really fucked us up, less chance of moving on Sidwell and Shorey and he might try and unsettle Ash.

Well that is true about Carew but that formation generally brings out the best in Gabby and having such an attacking midfield will carry a goal threat. If we used our squad properly, you could maybe start Carew in games we expect to win and stick Gabby on one of the wings as a really attacking inside forward who could use his pace effectively.

No?

In my view, if we want to play witht wo strikers then we probably need to buy a creative, ball playing central midfielder and a top class striker. I also think 4-4-2 reduces the effectiveness of Ashley Young.

I think Young's best games for us have come in a 4-4-2!

I think we need to be able to play both ways and MON does need to use the 4-5-1/4-2-3-1 more often than he does.  But I don't like switching Gabby to the wing in either formation.

Well we do get found out when we stick to one system for too long. You're probably right John, we should just alternate between the two systems. I'd also experiment with Ashley playing in the hole behind the striker(s) where he was so effective during 07/08.

We get stale when we stick to 4-4-2.

Can we not just give heskey away - i will even drive him to where he needs to go

I think having no striker would be better than him

Haven't WBA shown an interest in Ivanhoe?  I've been told £2M has been mentioned?  If this were true I'd be overjoyed
