Even if that was Robbie Keane?

I think 6 million for a player with his finishing ability would be a snip.

See Louis Saha as an example and the amount of goals he has scored.

Saha has scored 19 in 57 games at Everton.  Given that goals aside he doesn't overly contribute to the team, I think we need to be looking for more than 1 in 3 from any new striker.

A 1 in 3 striker would be a very good player, much more than that and you're into silly money territory.

I could live with 1 in 3 if you're talking about a player who also brings something esle to the table, such as the ability to drop off and link play.  That's why I advocate Robbie Keane, who can do this and actually has better than a 1 in 3 PL record.

But if you're talking about a poacher who does little else for the side, then 13 goals a season is not enough, IMO.

I like Eduardo and think he's in many ways exactly what we need, but I would share Mazrim's concerns over his injury record.

By the same measure you're using (League appearances), Eduardo has scored 8 in 41. 1 in 5 versus Saha's 1 in 3.

I think Eduardo has more to his game and the ability to improve.

I don't like him either and I've said so on here quite a few times and been accused of having an "irrational dislike" of him.  Nothing irrational about it,  aside from not liking many aspects of his approach to football, where some may perceive him as "witty and erudite" to me he comes over as snide and patronising, and trying a bit too hard to be like Clough when on TV.

That's exactly how I see things as well.

larf. you're classing Juninho in 2004 a high profile singing similar to owen? if we'd signed owen and he'd been on the bench it would have been about a month  before the press would be suggesting he'd leave for his england career

It's feeding time:-

I think both were top draw players who had injuries that limited them.  Previously starring lights in the PL who were no longer in that category.  You also mentioned Viera, and while his and Owen's best days were in England, Juninho did it for Boro, but mainly in Spain.  I think it's a reasonable comparison, but as it doesn't fit your argument I'm sure you'll disagree.

Oh he certainly does run the club from top to bottom (and I'm not convinced at all that that really is a good thing), but that's different to what Greg's suggesting. No, I agree with you, Paulie, but Greg appears to be saying that MON would rather sign bad players than good ones to make himself look bigger.

not at all. i think he'd sign pliable young good players given the choice, and established confident big name players a poor last. as i said look at our present squad - wouldn't say boo to a goose, not one big personality there

Are you saying you now don't think he's after Robbie Keane?

I like the idea that Friedel, Dunne, Collins, Warnock,Petrov, Heskey, Reo Coker, Carew etc are all wet behind the ears kids.

I don't think you've thought this one through, greg.

you suggesting robbie keane is media high profile. he's spurs 5th choice striker who's being punted round to all comers. if he fails at villa who will care apart from us? more importantly his career is in such a downward spiral he'll behave anyway

Well he's doing a terrible job of it, he comes across as nothing like Clough.

Says the bloke talking about it on a Villa message board 6 years later.(winky thingee)

Anyway, it's pretty irrelevant to our transfer business, so lets not labour the point any further.

I don't like him at all, and think his "quirky personality" is a definite case of "the emperor's new clothes".  That said, I don't care really, I just want to watch entertaining, winning football.  I don't like Alex Ferguson either, but I'd love him to be manager of Villa.

yep, comes over as an elaborate act to me as well

i'd have eduardo if he was available, he is a goalscorer, but he needs a run of games under his belt. he had a run of games in xmas 2007/ start of 2008 when arsenal were pushing for the title (before his injury) where he was fully fit and looked superb.

i still think bendtner and gabby would be a fantastic partnership though. bendtner would be a 1 in 2 striker in our side.

well lets just say i'd be more inclined to believe his eccentric deep thinker media persona if his tactics consisted of more than 'play the same team till they drop from exhaustion and then bring on heskey and sidwell'

I know plenty of eccentric deep thinker types who don't know the first thing about football, or much else for that matter. To be an eccentric deep thinker type, it's not necessary to be overly complicated. And don't forget that law was his first calling.

By the way, I'm not saying that I agree with your assessment of MON's tactics.
