More than likely city are in for both milner and arteta rather than one or the other.

They can afford to do as they please financially and at the same time weaken their opponents by signing their top players.

they can but you would imagine some footballers will look at what is best for their careers rather than their pay packet.

Surely if they got both Milner is far better staying off at Villa for his own career at club and country.

Next season squad sizes are limited to 25. It is massively unlikely they would sign both even if to weaken the competition.

If you believe The Mirror (and sometimes even a blind pig finds the trough) we're not the only ones interested in Ireland.

Fergie plotting swoop for unhappy City star

Published 23:00 03/07/10 By Simon Mullock

Sir Alex Ferguson is lining up a sensational raid on Manchester City for unsettled midfielder Stephen Ireland.

Ferguson was furious that Manchester United were beaten to the signature of £29million David Silva last week.

But he intends to ease his frustration by launching a bid for Ireland that will test City’s resolve not to sell to their bitter rivals.

Fergie saw Silva as an ideal successor to Paul Scholes and was planning to use the Spaniard as a creative central midfielder.

But United were blown away by the transfer fee City handed to Valencia and the £150,000-a-week wages that dwarfs anything currently on offer at Old Trafford.

It has forced the United boss to move his sights across town to City’s 2009 Player of the Year.

Sunday Mirror Sport revealed last month that Ireland had asked for a transfer after a disappointing campaign under Mark Hughes and Roberto Mancini.

United have been monitoring the Irishman’s rise through the ranks at Eastlands, but 12 months ago it was unthinkable that the 23-year-old midfielder who City fans call Superman would be allowed to leave the club.

City are ready to allow Ireland to leave now they have recruited Silva, who is also being earmarked for a central role by Mancini despite playing mostly as a winger for Valencia and Spain.

But the Blues will be loath to sell Ireland to their rivals – unless United pay a premium on a player they would value at about £12m if he was moving to any other club.

Liverpool and Everton would both be interested but are even more strapped for transfer cash than United.

Ireland, who like former Old Trafford captain Roy Keane hails from the Cork town of Cobh, comes from a family of United fans.

He is aware of United’s long-term interest and feels he needs to move to kick-start his career after Mancini said he had problems with Ireland’s attitude.

City have spent close to £70m bringing in Silva, Jerome Boateng and Yaya Toure. The spree will continue this week with the expected £25m arrival of James Milner.

Mancini also wants a striker and two new full-backs. Reports in Germany claim that Bosnian forward Edin Dzeko has told Wolfsburg to accept City’s offer of £28m.

City’s list of potential defensive recruits includes Barcelona’s Brazilian Dani Alves, Ajax’s Dutch international Gregory van der Weil and Aleksandar Kolarov of Lazio.

If you believe the press:

Milner to Manchester City
Ashley Young to Liverpool
Luke Young and Sidwell to West Ham
Cuellar off to a spanish team

Can see all that happening!

I'd be quite surprised if United went for Ireland. I mean, he's potentially as good as anyone but United are surely not in a position to have to gamble on that. What about Mesut Oezil? He'd seem to fit the bill perfectly for their long-term plans, and I'd be surprised if Ferguson and co haven't been watching him for years.

As for the Dzeko stuff, if that's true then City really are totally and utterly insane. Why another striker? What earthly reason do they have? They've already got Tevez, Bellamy, Santa Cruz and Adebayor, not to mention Adam Johnson and David Silva who play in those sorts of advanced roles. £28m? Mad. As for Dani Alves and Van der Wiel, the former is at best wildly optimistic and the latter is surely made up on the basis of the Mirror noticing he's good in the World Cup. He's played one season in Dutch football. He needs more time, after which he'll probably go to Barca - the old Ajax-Barca links remain very important to both clubs. Kolarov seems to be happening, though if he gets through the next season without a pretty catastrophic run of form I will be surprised.

I see they don't even mention us with relation to Ireland. Even though we're quite clearly interested (and if it is £12m, which I doubt, why wouldn't we be). We're also not that 'cash-strapped', unlike the Scousers, especially after that 'expected £25m' sale of Milner.

Maybe Delph when he returns from fitness. I'd hope we get someone better than Sidwell, but oh well.

I don't know if I posted it on here or somewhere else but I had the idea that we'd sign a new defensive midfielder and play him with Petrov who would go to a role as more of a playmaker and then Delph would take over the next season with Petrov leaving.

That Ghanian one would do for start...  Annan I think ...

I like him too.

same old same old - transfer windows are almost as depressing as seing the team sheet on match days and knowing full well if fit who the team will be.

Getting  abit bored by it all to be honest - MON, his policy of buying and the football we play

Can only see us going backwards this campaign

Wondered how long it would be before this came up again.

What precisely do you think MON is doing when he's "dithering" instead of signing players?

Ain't got a clue mate. Maybe watching Match of the day or playing on his Xbox..

But I know for a fact he has been offered player (s) at certain value and then when he has said he is now interested , the price has gone up £10 million..

Thats a fact ...

You can even tell by a purchase of Luke Young he is a ditherer..

Sorry, I should rephrase. I didn't mean "what activities does MON get up to in his spare time" because you don't sound like a maniac stalker. No, what I meant is, why do you think MON "dithers"?

I don't know why he dithers ..   I use to think it was because he dont like spending big money but he has now spent alot of money, so thats not the reason.

sometimes I would agree with him , when for example he wants Robbie Keane
but does not want to pay the wages Keane wants. So I expect Keane to drop his wage in this case and I think he will join Villa..

But other times , he got offered a French player for £4 million and MON stalled on it .18 mths later he then went back and was quoted £14 million  ..

Well with foreign players I can imagine that interrupting their development in their own country by a year could be severely detrimental. Going too early is probably the main cause of all disappointments with expensive young players: look at Forlan! I'm not saying that's MON's thinking exactly, but it's one logical explanation of which there are plenty more.

with the french player, It was actually one of our scouts that told him to get him. So Im just saying our scouts do the homework on players . It wasnt an agent that offered him , it was advice by one of our own.   and MON then did go back in 18 mths later..

should have took a punt at 4 million. He looked a good player..

especially when sidwell was more money ;-((
