Bottom line: the suggestion was that Keane, Doyle and O'Hara are the best we can hope for. Which is bollocks.

Me playing MON on FM with what I'd do is neither here no there.
I often talk about players and tactics I'd go for etc. I doesnt change the point that we can do better.

I'm glad you've cleared that up for everyone. I hope that it does turn out to be bollocks, and we sign some Champions League class players, but we'll see on the 1st of September.

Smudger, you're missing the point - you can sign players better than the three you mention without them being champions league players.

forgetting the reserves and taking for granted that milner was staying. 1st team wise i think we'd need a top striker, a replacement for petrov and a top right-back. that to my mind would cost 25m, and we won't spend that

We spent £20m on 3 defenders last pre-season, so i don't see any reason why not.

It's quite possible of course. Supposed ITK's have got it spectacularly wrong in the past, on the underestimating side. Since Randy arrived, we've never mouthed off about what we're going to spend, and have not really had cause to complain about what's been spent, IMO.

^^

Wot he said.

The sell to buy line peddled by the media is a gross misrepresentation of what RL said, but it could work to our favour.

Let the B-lose mouth off about their budgets and then see prices hiked.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if by the end of the summer we have a total spend similar to the past two years. Whether it's on the right type of player is  a different matter altogether. But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

I think we have an issue though. The problem is if we sell Milner now everyone will see we are ripe to be ripped off.

so it seems to me we are trying to secure other deals before we sell Milner but other clubs know this

or of course MON is doing nothing

Indeed.
And how depressing to believe that, although we pushed them all the way in the league and out performed them in cups, the best we can hope for is players Spurs have no use for.

I dont even think Doyle, O'Hara and Keane are bad players. Certainly not Keane and the other two are decent. But the best we can hope for?
Arent we a wee bit better than that? Can't we hope for the likes of van der Vaart? Darren Bent? Stephen Ireland? to name but three?

erm it was nearer 15m, and that was more or less covered by the barry fee. without sales of players we have to replace anyway there's  nothing like 25m knocking around i reckon

Erm i'll think you find it was nearer £20m. Collins and Dunne were £6m a piece and Warnock around £8m. As for Barry's fee, that went on Downing.

Collins - £5.5m. Dunne - £6m. Warnock - £7.5m. I make that about £19m.
Then you take away Barrys £12m, add the £7m for Delph, £12m for Downing, £2.5m for Beye... how much is that net Greg?

And how would you know what there is to spend? How much of the sponsorship is available? How much does Randy fancy putting in out of the several billion he has access to? Do you know? You'd be the only one outside the innermost chambers then.

What we do know there is money to spend and we usually spend a fair bit without the increased income to the club this last year.

Don't underestimate the Gnasher. I suspect he is an inter-dimensional entity whose logic is so superior that the true import of his pronunciations can only be guessed at by we poor humans.

well lerner has said spending will go down in the 'great plan' . i've no idea where you're getting those figures from. 5m for collins, dunne 5m, warnock 6m+ add ons. take the barry and gardner fee out the equation and you got roughly 15-17m. tell you what if we spend 25m nett like you seem to reckon, then remind me of this post, if not i'll remind you :0)

And the £7m on Delph?
