I still maintain that those 3 would improve us. Who would you prefer out of Keane, Doyle and O'Hara and Heskey, Harewood and Sidwell?

That's missing the point, though.

It isn't Sidwell, Harewood and Heskey we most need to be improving on.

It is Petrov, Carew and Agbonlahor.

If you think MON will buy someone considerably better than Gabby and Petrov and drop them to the bench next season you must be a very optimistic individual. In actual fact i would expect Keane to start anyway, at the expense of one of those strikers, and Doyle would certainly be a better alternative option that Heskey or Harewood.

No, I don't think he will. That's the problem.

The point i was making was that, whilst improving the hardly-ever-play peripheral plays will improve us in the literal sense, just improving those players alone will not be anything like enough.

We have to get players in with the potential to make the current first teamers second stringers.

I can't believe anyone in their right mind thnks Doyle, Keane and O'Hara would be enough to do that.

Neither do i, and that's why i came up with the list i did. We would impove a little bit once more.

It's not so much optimism but more I don't see the point in having an 'if I had the money i'd buy' post and then picking players that are going to do very little to improve us or change our style of play.  If they turn out to be the players we get I'll back them and pray they come good but I'm not going to 'settle' for them as the best we can get with 8 weeks to go until the window shuts.

Doyle and Keane would massively improve our technique and imagination around the box. There would be a big sacrifice in terms of power and pace however. So I suppose it depends on what you consider most important, which is a purely subjective judgement.

Enough to bring us the goals we need, though?

Keane has technique, but his time has been and gone. I can't agree with you on Doyle at all, though. I certainly don't see what you do.

If we're going to be mixing things up a little up front, goals has to be the prime consideration, in my opinion.

forgetting the reserves and taking for granted that milner was staying. 1st team wise i think we'd need a top striker, a replacement for petrov and a top right-back. that to my mind would cost 25m, and we won't spend that

Have to agree with Paulie, Keane 3-4 years ago would've been a good signing, now he's a play on the downward spiral of his career, ok if he's a stop gap for cheap but crazy if he's 8m+.

Doyle is just painfully average, he's a decent mid table prem player but nothing more.  I'd put him in the same league as darren bent in that regard, who is another one I wouldn't go near if we want to improve again.

I think you misunderstood my initial post then, it was more of a 'if this is how it turns out i wouldn't be too upset' based on players we have been linked with and who he is likely to go for, and taking into account previous close seasons and the recent financial problems.

Bottom line: the suggestion was that Keane, Doyle and O'Hara are the best we can hope for. Which is bollocks.

Me playing MON on FM with what I'd do is neither here no there.
I often talk about players and tactics I'd go for etc. I doesnt change the point that we can do better.

Yeah, the ten or twelve league goals more he scored than Gabby and Carew last season woud probably not be of much use.

Would like to see a few Germans heading our way. Podolski, Trochowski, Khedira, Klose would be good ad to varying degrees feasible.

I'd absolutely love to sign Ozil and Schweinsteiger, but not a hope in hell there.

almost all of that lot will want to play CL football next season. Unless we are willing to spend stupidly on wages like Man City might they'll all stay in Germany or end up at a top CL club. The German system has unearthed some real gems there.

We need to sign three players who instantly are inevitable for the first team. We need others who strenghten the squad granted, but for me we need three signings who instantly improve us. We all know in what positions.

Darren Bent scores goals if as a team you're setup entirely to help him score goals.  Teams like charlton and sunderland can play that way and make it work for their target of midtable security.  Teams that are wanting to push for honours need to have more about themselves.

The only way Bent would be a good signing is if he was used as a bully against the bottom half to ensure we get the points there.  As soon as we played anyone decent a better player would be required.

That's exactly why he hasn't done it internationally and is exactly why he will never be a success for a top side in the premier league.

However, if we had the money of man city I'd get him straight away to play the bully role against the weaker sides.

We spent £20m on 3 defenders last pre-season, so i don't see any reason why not.

Eduardo's the one, I think.

The others we've been linked with won't kick us on a level. Eduardo might, if he can recapture the promise he showed pre-injury.

I'd rather take a gamble than plod along taking 6th-7th.

And with the money we're getting from Milner, we can afford to take that gamble.
