Are we criticising O'Neill for not being in for Ozzil, when as SHQ has already pointed out, much bigger clubs (that cannot beat us in Europe! Ner ner!) closer to his home will be snapping him up?

As that would be quite ridiculous.

No, I was criticising him for failing to spot these players before they become super stars and for limiting his purchases to Britain and Ireland.

We won't sign the next Ozil so long as we don't scout for them. Look at the England squad and look at Villa. England doesn't seem to be producing playmakers right now. Gerrard and Lampard aren't playmakers at their clubs and that's why England looked so limited at the world cup. At their clubs, mostly foreign players provide the creative spark through the middle and Lampard and Gerrard are good at finishing of these moves. James Milner's best position is probably on the right where he is very effective. When he plays central midfield for us he brings energy, decent passing and work rate. He doesn't split a defence with a killer ball or go on a mazy run through the middle. Until the Enlish game starts producing Paul Mersons again we should do as Spurs, Liverpool, Everton and our other rivals do and start looking abroad for him.

We do have scouts and they are looking for promising players from all over the place.
We have some at the club already in the academy/reserve sides and we're definitely after more. Europeans, Americans, Aussies... etc

Monty has already answered that point in very eloquent fashion.

I'm sure we were aware of him, after seeing him in the under 21's. But you're mad to think that you can unearth an unknown talent in the Bundesliga without Bayern Munich getting wind of it. He'll probably leave Bremen for them this summer.

There was a highly rated young central midfield playmaker at Leeds a season or two ago, wonder what happend to him?

I brought up the subject up as he's the type of player we need and that it would be nice if we could attempt to sign him rather than some of the players we've been linked with. I'm not saying that he would join, hence the word 'ambitious' in my post.

We've done very well in scouting the younger players we've signed for big money in particular Ashley Young and potentially in the next few years Delph. What we need however is not jam tomorrow but a reasonable player who can provide some flair today. We don't have anything of that sort at the club and there are very few British based players who fit that description and even fewer of whom are gettable.

And that said probably me too. I'm just getting dazzled by players having a good world cup.

We was reportedly in for Ozil last year, so its a bit ridiculous to criticise MON for not buying a palyer now, who is out of our league.

I would criticize MON for not buying Messi though :-

I can't explain this UK-only policy of ours in any other way than that our scouting staff all must suffer from 1) flight, 2) ship and 3) train fobias. Too bad. Hopefully they build a bridge across the channel soon so our guys can cross it with their bicycles

Do you really think it is the scouts decision where they go and what they scout for ?

A-whole ;D That was my version of sarcastic comment. Propably didn't come up that way since my English ain't perfect :-)

Yes and it's great that we signed him and here's hoping he goes on to great things with us. He could prove one of the best.

But what about all the talent in Europe, Asia, South America, Africa?

In addition, as The Sandman says, we need something to take us on now. In my view we need a top striker to play alongside Gabby. I'd like to think we would look at targets beyond these shores. That's all I am saying really.

They either need to be in the national team (and the world and his wife will therefore be aware of them) or they won't get a work permit (for the last three of those continents).

Going for the likes of Figueroa, Palacios and Rodellega like Wigan do - then fine. But trying to sign the next Messi or Kaka just isn't going to happen.

Deph, Delf, AYoung, Gabby , Downing, Milner, all mobile versatile footballers, add a good footballer and at least 1 attacking FB, with Albrighton coming through as well, the future is bright.

True, but none of them is a really creative passer of the ball, with the possible exception of Delph, although I suspect his other attributes are stronger. Most of them have played most of our games in the last two years and we've consistently struggled to break teams down.

Ireland, Hleb, etc would significantly improve things, as long as we kept the rest of the team mobile rather than sticking with two out wide and two up top.

Leeds moved him out onto the wing half way through the season and he thereafter disappeared. Last I heard he was Gareth Barry's replacement.

Whether or not he's a playmaker, I have no idea and I doubt we'll find out next season either. The lad has talent but that's all we really know at the moment.

There are a lot of good young players in Europe who wouldn't need a work permit. Never mind signing the world's best, we'd be massively improved by signing the new Arteta or Alonso.
