Downing will almost certainly do better next term. If he doesn't with a full pre-season and no world cup to worry about he will have ran out of excuses. I'm glad we didn't get M. Petrov as he

I especially hope he does as my shirt has his name on it and I'm starting to look really stupid with it.

Strikers I think are better than Robbie Keane include Gabby Agbonlahor and John Carew.

I still don't understand how this mystical 'full pre-season' will suddenly help Downing grow some balls.

I will be quite prepared to eat my hat next year, but I think we've bought a pup in Downing.

As he said.  I too will eat my hat if this time next year we're talking about Downing in glowing terms - I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but for me he's a bottle job.

Downing has been disappointing but you can not write off an experienced, 10m pound player in the basis of half a season after a long spell out injured.

There's also the fact he's moved from his only other club - his hometown club - so it shouldn't be a surprise if he takes a while to settle.

Downing's got ability but he's always holding something back, and as said, sometimes when he plays he brings about visions of a 5 yr old girl having an hysterical screeching fit when encountering a spider. Or is that just me?

He is a complete fanny though. If we butch the lad up a bit, make him grow a chin, and get some fire in his belly, he'll be a quality player. He needs to get in the gym like Joe Cole did after he joined Chelsea.

It does sound like Keane is going to happen.
Somehwere, there is a faceplam happening.

Really though, he'd be a decent if predictable signing for us. He can link play up as well as chip in with goals and he wont be around long enough to hold up Delfouneso's progress.

If we get Ireland as well, we'd have a fair more amount of guile up front without compromising too much grit.
Buying Micks might be about as exotic as we go this summer. :)
Excuse me ?

Dont worry, I'm half Irish myself.

Downing will be better this coming season. You watch.

I want to agree with you Maz. But I remember agreeing with you about Sidwell coming good!

I don't think Downing has been anywhere near as bad as some people are making out. I'd say he was generally a 7 out of 10 performer but rarely going above it. Like Maz I'm expecting him to step up a level next season.

I think he was generally a 5 of of 10.

I'm another expecting Downing to become a real asset for us next season, it should however be noted that I said exactly the same thing about Sidwell this time last year.

I don't expect him to become some great combatitive midfielder that is the fear of the Premier League, but I do think we'll see more from him in terms of an attacking contribution.

I think Sidwell has taken a lot of people by suprise with how useless he's been. I really thought he would get his career back on track here.
Oh well, it happens.
