On that basis though Greg we can only sign players from the Premier League and maybe La Liga / Serie A. O'Neill has been criticised for not taking a chance on any unknown stars so what chance does it give us if the minimum requirement is that a player must have played at a Premier League-ish standard?

Greg, as you know I am very much not a monette but even I find your views on robbie keane very strange in the extreme, please tell me how he wasn't much cop at Celtic when he scored 16 in 19 games?

*sigh.* its scotland. he's playing teams who barring rangers are the equivalent of Champioship sides or lower. its like if we were in a league with blose, coventry, walsall, kidderminster etc.., some of those clubs struggle to get championship attendances so how they're expected to buy premiership level defences with thier finances is anyone's guess
But is 16 in 19 games and being made player of the year a failure?

The guy has scored regularly in the premiership and at international level- I do not see where you base your criticism from.

heh. the old "there's no-one better" arguement. last rolled out Jan 2009

Go on then, get your scrap book out and come up with a name.

we've come out with loads on this thread and elsewhere. unless you know MON's transfer budget how can you possibly say there's no-one better?

Indeed, you yourself suggested Jermaine Beckford.

as a reserve on a free. hey, if keane was on a free, and we signed him as reserve i wouldn't mind him either

Haven't you been paying attention?  It's from the message boards for Liverpool and Spurs fans, who all think he is 'bobbins' and want rid of him!

Do try and keep up.

I would just like us to buy someone who could improve. Robbie Keane is not going to improve, he might be alright, he might score 15 goals a season. We are not going to win the league with Keane upfront, we might show slight improvement that may lead us to finishing 6th again.

Robbie Keane is the kind of signing we would have made if Ellis was still here.

We are a decent team, we have a solid defence, this is the time to gamble, lets try and get someone who might turn out to be great not just good. Why not Falcoa, when you include re-sale values he will be cheaper than Keane, why not Rogdella, why not kallinic. I would even prefer Di Santos. Lets roll the dice, the premier league is boring enough without making predictable signings.

Signing the likes of Jermaine Beckford and Martin Petrov are not going to get us into the top 4, how ever cheap they maybe.

Beckford and M Petrov would both be excellent squad additions and would push us closer to the top four. However, I think Jermaine Coopersinjury has already signed for Everton.

of course not but its no indication of his total when he steps back up several levels. there's loads of bad strikers who scored buckets of goals in scotland, just like there's loads of avearge managers who won loads up there

I would be happy with Keane as long as the price was sensible

Personally I think we should be trying to buy 1st team players not extra reserves.

Given the choice between Petrov and Beckford or Albrighton and Delfouneso, I'd take our youngsters every time!

if petrov does arrive, no doubt we'll hear you moan yet again about MON's signings.

No you'll hear me say "OK then - let's judge him by what he does for us"

Which is what I said about Dunne last year when I didn't want him and we signed him.
