Wait, no. Sigh.

I'm not saying that I want Petrov, all I'm saying is that if we are going to get him then I'd rather hecome on a free transfer than spend the money on him.

Comprende?

If it is our future policy to buy to sell (and i am not against that especially if you are doubling your money every time) then Keane is never and i mean never going to command another transfer fee

would rather go for a younger model

I don't think you can build a squad that way, with every single player signed with a view to what they'll fetch in a couple of years. We need some nouse and experince up front and Keane has plenty of both.

I think the policy is, or at least seems to be, only spend large on younger players.  This does leave us open to 'bigger' clubs coming after our best players, but we have the guard of being able to command high fees for them.  If the right older player is available and would benefit us, money is not so tight that we can't afford to spend without the promise of a return.

From a sheer football perspective, we can't just play a bunch of under 25s all the time (and before anyone mentions Man U in 95/96, that was the exception that proves the rule!), so need the odd older head to balance things out and keep us competitive on the pitch.  Examples of this are Dunne and Freidel.

So, we need to watch what we spend on older players, so that we can use the majority of the funds on players that are either longterm investments or who we can make a substantial profit on.

As such, I don't see us spending £18m or anywhere near it on Robbie Keane, but if Martin thinks he can benefit us on the pitch, an opinion I agree with, he'll be after him at the right price.

Petrov is injury prone but when he does play he does chip in with goals and is a good crosser so on a free worth a shot.

I don't mind signing older players if they have the quality and can be an asset to the team. In my opinion Keane and Petrov are not those kind of players. Petrov would be a decent signing if we didn't already have two wingers more comfortable on the left. We need a right winger.

As for Keane here is his scoring record for the last few years excluding his spell at Celtic at a lower level.

To me it smacks of a player who peaked between 2005 and 2008. That is what the statistics say but even then you could argue he might rediscover that form but I've watched him a bit and thought he was magnificent in the period where is form was good and even at Liverpool I thought he did well and was unlucky not to score more. And since? Nothing. He has lost the extra yard strikers need, he seems to be lacking fitness and even seemed to be this way when he was scoring loads for Celtic in the Championship Reserve League.

I think that this could go one of two ways. I could be wrong and he could be an excellent signing for us or he could prove a monumental flop.

Presuming you're right, that's still a record of a goal every 2.5 games since moving to Liverpool, which is respectable.

I think the issue is he had two managers that didn't use him right and/or didn't want him, which does translate through to a player.  I'm happy he'll be worth at least 15 Premier League goals a season to whoever gets him!

He scored 12 for Liverpool and then 9 in half a season at Spurs, so that an average of 15 a season still, right up there with Gab and Big John, which ain't too bad for a withdrawn forward, those 15 goals could be very useful, even if he doesn't get back to scoring 20 plus.  15 is more than I'd expect Heskey, Harewood and Fonz combined to contribute if they were our competition for Carew/Gab next yr.

If Manc City get Milner, then we should at least 'ask' about taking Robinho in return.

The ideal position for Keane would be just behind the strikers - ala Merson.
I reckon he could really shine there.
He would pop up with the odd goal, but I think he has a bit of craft and guile which would create for others.

Behind the striker surely? I can't see us switching to 4-3-1-2 anytime soon given how important wide play is to our game.
