That said, if we played 4-5-1 with Petrov, NRC and Milner then that has a really nice balance to it. Heck we even won at Anfield with Sidwell playing the Milner role. And the year before at the emirates so possibly more about formation than personnel again.

I like the sound of that midfield.  It's got a bit of everything.  Gabby seems to play best up top on his own too, so in many ways the formation complements our current personnel.

I'd like to see an upgrade on Downing as the third attacker (young, gabby +1) but I have no idea who.

Just to throw a name into the hat, Dos Santos played well today for Mexico, was always impressed with him when at Barcelona, obviously fell out with Harry at Spurs. Good control, can pass and more importantly has that little bit of something special about him which our front men lack. Opinions Please

A very talented young player.  I felt he was worth
a punt when spurs loaned him out to Ipswich last season.

I think we have missed the boat in terms of value for money though.
Imagine he would be back up at the £ 7- 10 mil Spurs paid for him.

I didn't even realise it was him.

He looked pretty good tonight.  But perhaps the demands of the Premier League, week in, week out, didn't suit his style or temperament.  Who knows.

In any case, he doesn't strike me as the kind of player Martin seems to prefer.

Birmingham planning stunning summer swoop for Spurs star - Exclusive

Birmingham are targeting Robbie Keane after missing out on Italian hot-shot Fabrizio Miccoli.

Brum had agreed a £5million deal to sign tricky diminutive striker Miccoli from Palermo on a four-year deal.

But the forward decided to remain with his Sicilian club, where he is skipper, and ambitious Premier League City have already started chasing other options.

Boss Alex McLeish, whose side finish ninth last term, wants a prolific forward to play off new 6ft 8in target man Nikola Zigic.

And Tottenham marksman Keane, 29, surplus to requirements at the north London club, now tops their wish-list.

Keane is out of favour with Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, who loaned him to Celtic earlier this year.

Redknapp wants to offload Keane to raise funds to bolster his squad who have qualified for the Champions League.

Midlands neighbours Aston Villa also fancy the Republic of Ireland forward.

But City have already commissioned an agent to do the deal and have stolen a march on their Second City rivals, who must sell to buy.

Birmingham have splashed owner Carson Yeung's cash by signing Zigic from Valencia and Ben Foster from Manchester United for around £6m apiece

Anyone else getting a bit fed up being told that Villa have to "sell to buy" over and over and over again in the papers? They talk about it as if we have no money whatsoever, and are forcing Davies, Shorey, Sidwell et al to stand outside the stadium with cardboard signs around their necks, desperately trying to push them on to anyone who'll listen.

strange how the truth can hurt so much isn't it.

I see several Prem managers are out at the World Cup,yet plenty more are obviously out looking to bring in new players. Gareth Barry seems to have become the lynchpin to Englands progress and the only transfer news associated with Villa is of exits and crazy speculation suggesting O'Neill will buy foreign players.

Fixtures out, soon players will be reporting back, whats the latest odds that Mon's phone is switched off answerphone?

At least the World Cup takes minds off the lack of any news from Villa

If Keane had the choice between us and them, I'm dead sure he would go for us every time.

He's big pals with Richard Dunne amongst other things.

the fact that blues are even linked with him, should tell us to stay well  away. a top class striker wouldn't be mentioned in relation to them. MFH all over again.

How sad Greg that you find it necessary to gloat that blues might be after robbie keane- he is a class player and would be a great addition to our team, sometimes you really amaze me with your views my friend!

Eh, he's linked with the blose so we shouldn't touch him, your making him out to be some sort of modern day Kevin Francis.

its just common sense.  a top striker wouldn't go to blose, or even consider them, just as there's been no Bent for blose stories because they'd be daft frankly. Keane is considered over-the top and unwanted by spurs hence the link to blose as a possible destintion. he's not going to get much better offers is he?
