gerrard is massively overrated though. only hve to watch england to see that

Would Gerrard get into Spain's midfield? yes. Would Arteta? Not even in the squad. Says it all.

you sure? i'd have to hear a spaniards opinion before i broke up the midfield of the european champions

Granted I don't know many Spaniards, but he'd get into any midfield in Europe. I doubt any midfield in the world would pass him by. yes he didn't have his best season for Liverpool, and he's not been used right by England IMO, as he is one of the best nmidfielders in world football without question.

Greg thinks Scholes can't pass, which tells you all you need to know.

Come off it Greg. Gerrard is massively superior to Arteta. He's not had the best season by his own high standards but he's one of the top midfielders in the world and Arteta... isn't.

Yes, I'd say he's twice the player Arteta is and that's not being unkind to Arteta at all.

different types of player so a direct comparison is pointless but i do wonder whether Steviemi would have got into the CL playing in Everton's side. In  a club with small resources and limited ability he's done remarkedly well.. The national side is red herring as they have a far better team than england and  a guy playing in a small side in england has as much chance  of getting selected for spain as a brit playing in a small side in spain. anyway wenger is rumoured to be interested so we may just see him perform with quality round him soon and i doubt gerrard will look twice as good to you then

Pass, without doubt. He probably knows more about quantum physics than tackling though.

Well, Arteta hasnt got into his national side whereas Gerrard has been an everpresent so its probably not fair to compare in that regard.
But I would say a direct comparison is very fair. They are exactly the same type of player, one just has a lot more ability than the other.

Would Champions League winning Liverpool ever have built a team around Arteta? No.
The guy can pass, has good vision and scores the odd good goal but Gerrard has the complete range of passing, is a an absolute goal machine in midfielder terms and runs games by his self regularly, even against the best teams.

I might add that I cant stand the ugly twat and I'd love to put my fist through the back of his head, but credit where cridets due, he is and has been for quite some time, a truly world class player.

It is a fair point. Scholes has to be the worst tackler I have ever seen, and then he gets over eager and just chops people in half.

Arteta is a lovely player though. Not as dynamic as Gerrard, but I would love him in the Villa midfield.

aye, don't get me wrong i think gerrard is a fine player but i do think our opinions get coloured by club football and invariably when we get to the world cup we find they're not that good. even excusing green's howler, we were pretty duff and its not a new thing. for gerrard, and lampard, just exchange robson, hoddle, beckhm scholes etc.. all supposed world beaters

I think Arteta can pass the ball aswell as Gerrard, but what he doesn't have is his athleticism and goal threat.  Arteta is most similar to petrov in our current side, although a better player .

Unless Randy is planning to declare the independent state of Aston, I think we should be judging players by their club form over internationals.

Not sure what the relevance is of whether Arteta is better than Gerrard.

Arteta's a quality player who would offer us something that we don't have: craft as opposed to graft.

How did you work that out?. They're totally different players in my opinion

Its like comparing Yorke and Dublin

Arteta would get in the England squad thats for certain

Arteta is a central midfield playmaker that favours the attacking side of the game whereas Gerrard is a central midfield playmaker that favours the attacking side of the game.

No way would Gerrard get in ahead of Xavi and Iniesta. Spain would have to change their whole set up to accommodate Gerrard and he's not worth that given what they've achieved over the last couple of years.

Arteta is more of a wide player that sometimes plays centrally. That's the opposite to Gerrard isn't it?
