he's selling them because they're bobbins and he won't play them. and if he's planning to raise funds with the likes of beye, nrc, shorey davies etc., we'll not gonna have much to spend.

So do you think we could just sign players without selling others? Do you think a squad of 30+ is desirable? Do you think that we can support the wage bill?

It's something that every club and every manager has to do, even Chelsea and Man City, yet for your own warped reasons you think it is a big issue at Villa.

no i don't but then you can't deny there's 30m worth of players he bought that he's willing to let go this summer. Doesn't really sit well with transfer genius tag....

Who's actually called him that?

I think he operates well in the market and buys solid players that on a whole have improved us dramatically.  But the only 'genius' I see operating these days is Wenger!

He's selling them because we can do without them and it raises cash and space on the wage bill.  If that translates to "they're bobbins" in Nash World, then so be it.

he's selling them because they're crap or he thinks they're crap. with the exception of Young i can't see how anyone would think we've got any VFM out of the firesale six. and you can add Ivanhoe and Harewood to them as well

Just don't agree there's any method in his madness. He's shown time and time again he's willing to sell players before replacements have arrived, not replace players for a season or more, pay miles over the odds for players, buy knackered players etc.. just the way he is, but claiming its some genius trait designed to get the best deals is stretching credibility in my view.

Like who for example? He's sold players that are either unwilling to play for us or who are not good enough in his opinion to play for us. having them on the wage bill would be pointless.

I haven't seen anyone declaring him to be a genius in the transfer market, and I feel just about the same as most I guess, with regards to the lack of big names coming in, but that doesn't detract from his transfer market strategy.

He does it his way and whether you like it or not it does, and has, produced results. That some players haven't worked out is testament to how difficult it is. For every Ashley Young there's a Steve Sidwell. For every Thierry Henry a Christoper Wreh, and for every Cristian Ronaldo a Ralph Milne.

It's easy to say he should have bought better but you have to remember we finished his first season 11th in the league, hardly the best place to attract the quality required. Even now, finishing 6th means nothing when you want to bring in players that should be able to help us break into the top 4.

What he needs to do in my book, if find quality players that want to play in England without paying over the top prices for them. That means taking a risk but he has the scouts to monitor the players over a season to minimise that risk. It was widely reported last summer that we were interested in Falcao at River Plate for £4m. We missed out, he went to Porto and would now cost in the region of £20m. Was he worth the risk? Absolutely. At that price, even if he'd failed, he would still have been attractive to move on to a Spanish club and get our money back.

Easy to say in hindsight but Martin does need to start taking a few more risks, both off and on the field.

But will he want to take risks this summer? Especially as spending power may only be at a premium.

well most of us think he should be looking abroad, but i wouldn't hold your breath. ISM let the cat out the bag on that one.

Value for money is very subjective, but we need to wait and see what we actually get for these players before we decide on that.  For instance, should we get the majority of our money back on Luke Young, then I'd say that WOULD be VFM having had one season as a regular and one as a semi-regular out of him.

Not that that will stop you spouting off on wasted money, I know.

Maybe so but whoever will sign will be expected to come up with the goods immediately. That's the pressure from us, the fans, especially following Tottenham getting 4th and us realising that we could start going downards with them having stolen a march on us, a more money Man City, and the possibility of a resurgent Liverpool and you can through Everton into the mix.

With that in mind I can see why MON will err on the side of caution. How man foriegners can you name that have come in and been an instant success?

Who's us? I don't care where they come from as long as they're the right players.

And I don't believe for one minute we don't 'look' abroad.

The very top players brought in by the CL clubs are instant successes, due both to them being class and sliding straight into a very good team.  And unfortunately that is not the market we will be shopping in.

How was Rodallega's first season at Wigan, for example?

It won't happen all the time, but I do think it is a consideration that deserves to be taken into account.
