Belletti would be better than Carlos at right back too, but then so would any our our right backs I suppose.

There was a rumour Gabby was going to Spurs? For a poxy £10m?

Dear me. Silly season is in full swing.

Almost.
Keane was part of the deal, which actually makes it even worse!

Sorry, i have only just seen this, Joe Cole and Michael Ballack on a free transfer anyone?

Wow there are some great PL players available this summer.
Get in there MON!

Hmmmm, I think we have more chance of seeing Puskas in a Villa shirt.

If we can get him then I'd prefer him to Heskey or indeed Carlton Cole.

And yes I know he is dead!

Therefore gabby would be valued at around £20m- not a bad valuation in all fairness.gabby seemed to finish the season poorly and their were rumours flying around on here of a bust up between him and mon at the time he was out, maybe   Interesting.

You can stick Robbie Keane where the sun don't shine. Every time I saw him for Celtic he seemed to miss a handful of chances. At best he'll be first choice for a year, spending the remaining two years on the bench whilst picking up £50k-£60k a week.

No thanks.

Came through at Ajax and was on Chelsea's books so he has had a taste of the english lifestyle.

Should we sign him, I can see a 20-page thread emerging on whether he counts as having PL experience or not.

"See, Martin does sig players from abroad!"

"He was on Chelsea's books so doesn't count"

"But he never played for them."

And so on.  And so on.

Must admit, I immediately dismissed the link when I heard it initially.

But

(a) He's played for Chelsea (albeit without breaking through)
and
(b) It's reported in the Guardian. I'm sure they're more than capable of creative reporting bordering on fiction when it comes to football transfers. But they have a better track record than most when it comes to reporting our business.

Do they? Just because it is a 'serious' paper doesn't mean they have better football inside knowledge. You tend to find tabloids are as good for getting the scoops as they have to be - they have more readers.

Yeah Peter, they do.

I wouldn't say it otherwise.

Might have a little something to do with them being a more 'serious' paper. But it's probably got even more to do with MON being friends with one of their journos.

From memory, they called the Ashley Young > to Villa story whilst other papers reported it was between Tottenham and West Ham. Ditto Curtis Davies. They also dismissed the Tuncay > Villa rumours that were gathering pace in the tabloids last summer and were one of the first to report our interest in Richard Dunne.

They also report far more shit. So maybe because they throw more mud they have a higher number of things that stick.

The data that also backs up what Kevin says

Disagree. There was a table collated last summer or the summer before about which papers got most of their transfer speculations right. The Daily Record came top - and it wasn't just Sottish transfer news. I don'r recall the Guardian being anywhere at the top.

That's the one. So they are 2nd with a whopping 29.7%. Hardly the doyens of transfer scoops though. although neither are the Daily Record. What it shows -the table - is that they're all much of a muchness.

Based on the presumption that MONs available transfer budget may depend on where we finish this season, what level we'll be competing in Europe next season, and getting rid of some of the current squad...which players do you think we should be realistically targeting to bring to Villa Park in the summer?

There will be a lot of players putting themselves in the shop window during the World Cup, so which players have caught your eye and could improve the current Villa squad?

I'll start the ball rolling with a few that have already been mentioned on here:

GK: Joe Hart
MID: Jamie O'Hara
FWD: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar
FWD: Nicklas Bendtner

Only Jamie O'Hara is a realistic possibility there.
