the spurs fans wanted him out of the spurs team when he was being picked. they still won't be exactly crying if he leaves this summer which should tell you something.

I'm sure some did, but others did not.  And I think it was more of a reaction to him leaving them for Liverpool and them coming back a failiure, imagine our response if the same thing had happened with Barry in January this year?  It does not 'tell' us anything.

Quote from: "gregnash"
to my mind no combination of Keane, Carew or gabby is going to get the 15 extra goals that spurs scored more than us last season and to think it will is the very definition of "blind hope".

At least this has something resembling a footballing point!  I don't think we need to score 15 more goals to make up the difference.  If I remember rightly we conceded two less than them, so does a 13 goal 'swing' represent the 6 points we were behind them or has it more to do with the 9 they put past Wigan?  We need to score more in the tight home games, which I think Keane would help us with.

i'd rather he put the 9m in a high interest account and spend it next summer on someone good rather than piss it up the wall on Keane

Yeah, I can already imagine your "Well done, Martin" posts if we don't sign a striker this summer!

Also strong links today about Mbark Boussaoufa, a midfielder at Anderlecht. The Daily Mail and Guardian both claiming we've made an £8m bid. Interesting. Could be the midfield playmaker we've been craving.

Didn't know too much about him, so this info may be useful to others -

Came through at Ajax and was on Chelsea's books so he has had a taste of the english lifestyle.

Petrov is ace, if he's fit he'd be awesome. I have no idea if he is, but he managed to score a few golas at the end of last season and looked sharp. He's certainly not the player he was at Wolfsburg a number of years ago, but as an experienced player, free agent, to play in half the games next season it's a good business. Someone I'd trust to know what he's doing.

right......so if barry came back and had a barnstorming season they'd be people offering to drive him to a new club? i know we're an odd bunch but not that odd

end of the day keane will have to play to score. i think its logical that there will be a drop in goals from either gabby or carew unless mon has some free scoring midfielder in his sights. The heskey scenario is a big red herring to my mind. forget him. i want someone who will get 18+ goals to carew's 8 or so coming off the bench not someone who will beat Ivanhoe's total

Should we sign him, I can see a 20-page thread emerging on whether he counts as having PL experience or not.

"See, Martin does sig players from abroad!"

"He was on Chelsea's books so doesn't count"

"But he never played for them."

And so on.  And so on.

The Guardian were just reporting the Mail story in their rumour mill. I won't be pinning too much hope on this happening. Not that I know anything about the player anyway.

Petrov would be good business on a free. But I see him going somewhere like West Ham and playing more games. His injury record is the main problem, because he's got ability.

I'm not pinning hopes on anything, merely reporting what's being reported. The Belgian press have been claiming we've made a solid bid - I thought I'd take a break from pages of Robbie Keane debate and throw something different in!

Martin petrov is one of stans best friends , having read the book he wrote at Celtic called stan , they are pretty close mates and maybe that will swing it in our favour.

For a free it would be a quality addition.

Keane has scored 22, 23, 12, and 25 goals in his last 4 seasons, albeit many of the 25 were in Scotland.  That's still flipping good going, we're not talking about a guy who will just beat Heskey's tally of 5, he will probably get more than 3 times that amount.
