to me it would just sum up our level of ambition frankly.  a guy unwanted by a top4 club below us a year ago, who had to farmed out to celtic to do any good and who we tried to buy 10 years ago. the future's bright......

If we only signed players wanted by top 4 clubs, we'd sign nobody.  He scored 11 in 29 games after going back to Spurs (not earth shattering, but still decent), so did NOT need to be farmed out to celtic to do any good.  And who cares what did or did not happen 10 years ago?

Try to judge him on his contribution to us as a football team and not your own criteria of what he 'says' about us!

Keane and our 20 million+ "marquee" signing would be fantastic.
Get Emile on his bike and maybe big John, although he could add something else on the bench.
With this, and the Fonz hopefully pushing for starting place then things will be looking very good indeed.
One can dream, one can dream...or one can be deluded.

i'd be absolutely gutted if we buy him

This is the bit I don't get.  Saying he's overpriced or we should be going for younger I can understand, even if I don't necessarily agree with, but to say you'd be 'gutted' is just bizarre to me when we're talking about a proven quality Premiership striker.

Underwhelmed?  Fair enough.  But 'gutted'???

to me it would just sum up our level of ambition frankly

Coming from someone who wants us to sign Martin Petrov.

He looked very good in a decent Man Citeh side at the turn of the year.

Usually when he's been in form/ not injured in recent seasons they've played well. Coincidence or not I'm not sure.

I'd have reservations about any deal, not so much because of his ability but more the overall average age of the side. It will be another player in and around the 30 bracket.

That said, if we shift a fair amount of deadwood this summer and Petrov is one of a number of incoming players it won't be the worst bit of business. It should give Downing a kick up the arse for one thing. There is no way he should be a guaranteed starter based on his form to date with us.

Agree with this. He is not a player you would want to spend a big transfer fee on due to his age and injury problems, but as one of four wide men in our squad I think we could do a lot worse. I don't think there is any problem with his work ethic, and on form he is electric.

he was shite at liverpool and the spurs fans wanted him out of the spurs team when he was being picked. they still won't be exactly crying if he leaves this summer which should tell you something. NO manager chasing top4 loans a player if they think they can't cope without him and they did, easily.  End of the day, we've had this Keane shite/good conversation about 20 times this summer and to my mind no combination of Keane, Carew or gabby is going to get the 15 extra goals that spurs scored more than us last season and to think it will is the very definition of "blind hope". i'd rather he put the 9m in a high interest account and spend it next summer on someone good rather than piss it up the wall on Keane

all on frees, and as back-up to the first team. if they cost 9m and were expected to spearhead our CL challenge i'd say the same about them as Keane

So Keane isn't even a good player in your opinion.  Can't agree.

he was a good player. i have serious doubts he is anymore, and even when he was he was never the  consistent goalscorer we need

Fairly heavily linked with Martin Petrov, I see. He's a very good player IMO, bit jinxed with injury of late, however. On a free.. well, he'd definitely give us another attacking option and that bit of unpredictability in the last third of the field. Bet we don't get him though - not the typical profile of the kind of player MON goes for.

Also strong links today about Mbark Boussaoufa, a midfielder at Anderlecht. The Daily Mail and Guardian both claiming we've made an £8m bid. Interesting. Could be the midfield playmaker we've been craving.

Keane? Would still be a decent signing. Good for 15 goals a season.

What we have here with Keane is a good example of why the manager is paid millions and why buying players is a business fraught with pitfalls. Some want him, others don't and I don't think there's a clear move towards either school of thought of buying him.

Often agree with you Greg, but on the subject of keane I think you are wrong. He's still a fans favourite at spurs but it was tarnished a bit when he left for Liverpool- keane would be a great addition to our team and is a better finisher than anyone we have at the club.

I'd be delighted to see him sign for us!
