Martin Petrov to spark bidding war as Bulgarian released by Manchester City alongside Benjani and Sylvinho
By Sportsmail Reporter
Last updated at 1:37 PM on 8th June 2010
Manchester City trio Martin Petrov, Benjani Mwaruwari and Sylvinho will all leave Eastlands this summer after the club opted not to offer them new contracts.

All three were used only sparingly by boss Roberto Mancini last season and their departures were expected, with the Italian set to bring in a number of players during the close season.

Petrov was signed by Sven-Goran Eriksson from Atletico Madrid in 2007 and enjoyed an impressive debut season on the wing.

But the Bulgarian's time at City was blighted by injuries and he leaves having made 57 starts, scoring 15 goals.
Bolton will lead the chase for the serial-assister, but they will face competition from Aston Villa, Everton and West Ham.

Striker Benjani was another Eriksson purchase, arriving from Portsmouth in January 2008 after netting on a regular basis during the first half of the season.
He made an instant impact by scoring the winner on his debut against Manchester United but he faded out of the picture and spent the end of this season on loan at Barclays Premier League rivals Sunderland, where he failed to score in eight matches.
Brazil defender Sylvinho joined City last summer after helping Barcelona win the Champions League but the 36-year-old was restricted to only nine starts.
Youngsters Jack Redshaw, Tobias Johansen and Karl Moore have also been released.

How, and why exactly would fucking Bolton lead the chase?

Why on Earth would we want him? Just goes to prove how the press perceive us as small-time.

If we are paying a transfer fee then we need to look at having a sell on fee. There is no fee with ballack so we would not be tipping 9 million down the tube a la R Keane. Experience is important, Ballack is a winner he would help bring on Gardener and Delph rather than block their progress.

I disagree.  What we need to do is look at the total financial package signing the player would bring and decide if it's a) worth it/value for money and b) affordable to the club.  Whether that money is in wages or transfer fee it costs us the same regardless.

If you told be Robbie Keane would be £9m, but only want £10,000 a week, I'd bite your hand off.  You can factor in re-sale value if you like, but you never know whether a player can be moved on or not - see Marlon Harewood!

Yeah agreed. What it comes down to is I think Ballack is worth 100k a week on a two year deal but I dont think Keane is worth 130k a week (when you include fee) on a three year deal.

Agreed again.

I just don't think Keane is on, or would be asking for, £130k a week!

This assumes Keane is on 70k a week and we buy him for 9 million on a three year deal. It works out as about 130k a week.

With you.

But then shouldn't we also factor in the £2m signing Ballack would probably want as a Bosman?  Or the fact that we could sell Keane on for £2m after two years?

And like I said, we'd have to start paying other players more of a parity if we gave Ballack £100k a week.

Now that Joe Cole is officially available on a free, I reckon we could do a lot worse than talk to him. His wages may be an issue though.

We don't stand a chance.

He'll want close to £100k a week & he'll have offers from bigger clubs in bigger tournaments.

If Ballack wants a 2m signing on fee he can whistle. You can factor in a sell on fee with Keane, but to me he still seems overpriced. I think if we give it a season Spurs will give him away because they will want to get him off their wage bill. If we spent money on him we would be Spurs a massive favour.

i'd have no problem paying 15m for Keane if he had some recent pedigree about him and was 26-28. that way you get some VFM out of him over 4-5 years with the possibility of selling him while he's still worth something. 9m for a 2/3 year stop gap striker seems excessive and short-sighted to me.

If keane helps us into the champions league in his time here, then what does it matter if there's no sell on value- he would have more than repaid his transfer fee.

Some players we would look for a sell on value but that doesn't have to apply in all cases.

Keane could give us so much in 3 yrs here that I think he'd be the darling of the holte end-I may be biased because i've wanted robbie keane in our team for the last 11 yrs but he is still top class .

Ballack I doubt would come here to be honest and is a bit injury prone ,I think his wage demands would be too much for us, Ireland would be my choice .

I'd take Ballack, he could be to us what Davids was to Spurs a few years back.

If we could keep Jimmy then a three of him, Ballack and Stan with Jimmy doing their legwork would be ideal.

Ashley and Gabby off a new front man and we've got ourselves a nice front six.

I get the thought behind that, but I just don't think we'd get anyone as good for less than £9m regardless of age.

ballack's a bit injury prone to me. the wages are a joke as well. personally i think both him and cole will struggle to find better deals. but then i reckon Cole is going to Citeh anyway, who are about the only club who would offer him more. probably means milner won't be off though. ;0)

Ballack has been a fine player but I think his time in the Premier League is over. He wouldn't suit us at all either and for the expense I think he'd be disasterous.

Ballack could to us what Davids was for Spurs? What? Not very good then? And highly paid?

Rumours this morning that he's off to Real Madrid anyway.

Unless Blooze come in for him of course.
