Martin Petrov to spark bidding war as Bulgarian released by Manchester City alongside Benjani and Sylvinho
By Sportsmail Reporter
Last updated at 1:37 PM on 8th June 2010
Manchester City trio Martin Petrov, Benjani Mwaruwari and Sylvinho will all leave Eastlands this summer after the club opted not to offer them new contracts.

All three were used only sparingly by boss Roberto Mancini last season and their departures were expected, with the Italian set to bring in a number of players during the close season.

Petrov was signed by Sven-Goran Eriksson from Atletico Madrid in 2007 and enjoyed an impressive debut season on the wing.

But the Bulgarian's time at City was blighted by injuries and he leaves having made 57 starts, scoring 15 goals.
Bolton will lead the chase for the serial-assister, but they will face competition from Aston Villa, Everton and West Ham.

Striker Benjani was another Eriksson purchase, arriving from Portsmouth in January 2008 after netting on a regular basis during the first half of the season.
He made an instant impact by scoring the winner on his debut against Manchester United but he faded out of the picture and spent the end of this season on loan at Barclays Premier League rivals Sunderland, where he failed to score in eight matches.
Brazil defender Sylvinho joined City last summer after helping Barcelona win the Champions League but the 36-year-old was restricted to only nine starts.
Youngsters Jack Redshaw, Tobias Johansen and Karl Moore have also been released.

How, and why exactly would fucking Bolton lead the chase?

I wouldn't go anywhere near Petrov. I would take Ballack on a two year contract mind.

This. With bells on.

Read from somewhere he might be off to the Middle East.  Even if he isn't, we can't afford his wages.

Without a transfer fee he would be cheaper than R Keane. Offer him 100k a week for two years. 10.4 million. Sell Sidwell for 3 million, we will save 3 million in his wages, sell reo cocker 4 million, save 2.5 million wages. Make 2.5 million. In that time Delph will be more than ready. CM: Petrov, Ballack, Milner, Delph, G Gardener.

I would rather have a smaller squad of quality than loads of fillers. If Albrighton is looking good also have option of playing Downing in the centre alongside Ballack.

Then surely Everton would lead the chase, no?

Unless he hasn't passed his driving test.

You were banging on about not signing players who had no sell on value a week ago now you want Ballack?

Chris, I don't mind if it's someone who's world class.

We don't see many down our way. His 2nd half cameo in the semi took the game away from us.

With Ballack and Cole leaving Chelsea, I wonder if they'll be in for Milner.

That sounds plausible on paper, but the issue with giving one player £100k a week is that all our top players would want it.  Both existing ones like Ashley Young and anyone new we try to sign.  It would end up costing us a LOT more than just Ballack's wages.

If we are paying a transfer fee then we need to look at having a sell on fee. There is no fee with ballack so we would not be tipping 9 million down the tube a la R Keane. Experience is important, Ballack is a winner he would help bring on Gardener and Delph rather than block their progress.

I disagree.  What we need to do is look at the total financial package signing the player would bring and decide if it's a) worth it/value for money and b) affordable to the club.  Whether that money is in wages or transfer fee it costs us the same regardless.

If you told be Robbie Keane would be £9m, but only want £10,000 a week, I'd bite your hand off.  You can factor in re-sale value if you like, but you never know whether a player can be moved on or not - see Marlon Harewood!

Yeah, you never know.  Just like him playing in the CL for some Turkish club before us.

I'm still waiting for Trannyzipisoffspor to come for Sidwell.

Yeah agreed. What it comes down to is I think Ballack is worth 100k a week on a two year deal but I dont think Keane is worth 130k a week (when you include fee) on a three year deal.
