I have a confession I have kept hidden all these years......

I was feeling that back in the 80's we signed what I thought was a donkey when a certain striker joined for us ......especially an ex Bluenose one too....

No prizes for guessing who that was.

So perhaps people who were not around then should think twice before slagging off Doyle too much

Whilst bracing myself for the inevitable "but they're shit" didn't we sign Downing and Sidwell relatively early?

Downing 16th July
Sidwell 10th july

Not too late then. Honestly, is there much point buying players in June?
They're likely to be players nobody else wants and their contracts dont change over until the 1st July anyway.

If you cant wait to sign players, tough shit. Go out and play or watch the Cricket or something.

i tend to agree maz. still doesn't stop me hoping he'll surprise us one year and actually sign someone early

Arsenal have apparently been trying to sign Chamakh for a year or more. Boateng might be a good player and Citeh have the resources that can make any further negotiations pointless.

Aside from those two and possibly including them, who cares?

About the Robbie Keane rumour, a lot of people don't want him and reckon he's past it, but I thought I'd check some stats and see what was what:-

2009/2010 (half season with Spurs before loan to Celtic) - 20 games and 6 goals.  1 every 3.3 games.
2008/2009 (half season with Spurs after returning from Liverpool) - 19 games and 5 goals.  1 every 3.8 games.

Since coming back to Spurs he's played virtually a full season, hardly 'out of favour' with Harry as some have suggested, and scored on average once every 3.5 games.  His PL career total is 121 in 327, which is 1 every 2.7 games, so there is an argument he's less prolific than he used to be.

If we singed him as I want it to happen, replacing Heskey, then from the 31 games Heskey played in 09/10, we would be expecting 9 goals from him.  Heskey managed 3, so what would those extra 6 have meant to us in terms of points?  I think it goes to show he's be a VERY useful signing for us and can really contribute to the cause as part of a rotating frontline with Gabby and Carew, even if he isn't 'the answer' upfront all on his own!

i think the interesting bit is the majority of them are foreign based players who because of the system become available for talks a bit earlier than brit players who probably won't get back from their hols till july. in that context i'm not surprised we're not active in june :0)

I think that most people's issue is the alternative we could have.

Would I rather sign Keane or sign nobody? Well, Keane is certainly better than nobody.

Would I rather sign Keane or buy someone who could theoretically get more than the nine goals that Keane might bring for his £10m+ transfer fee.

I was erring on the side of caution with the prediction of 9.  I think he's get more for us with a manager that believes in him and wants him, which wasn't the case when he went back to Spurs.  Plus, if it was £10m+ I'd look elsewhere, but that's mmore to do with age/lack of sell on value then him not being good enough.

I was just trying to argue against the view he's a spent force and illustrating what he could have brought to us if he had had Heskey's game time in 09/10.

Ireland, keane , Doyle. And clyne plus another midfielder would be a good summers business, it would mean
losing milner and some of our bench players but would be for the teams benefit overall.

Similar to selling platty when big ron spent the cash wisely and built a better team!

The latest ex-Bluenose striker we bought is a copper bottomed, 24 carat, cast iron donkey though.

The problem for me with Keane is he'd be a quick fix that would need replacing in 12 months, unless he'd be prepared to sit on the bench.

best case scenario for me with Keane is he makes an impact for 2 seasons similar to saunders (though he was 2 years younger than Keane) and then we're left looking for a striker again with no money from a Keane sale to pay for it. what worries me is on a lot of the spurs boards they've been saying keane has "lost" something in speed of reactions. not good
