I see Villa have been linked with David Bentley again.  Could this be a good aquisition for Villa.

I do not think I would buy him in addition to what we already have but in part exchange for Downing it could work out.  I like Downing as a player and think he has a lot more to offer but right side of midfield is not his position and he is wasted out there.  I still believe he was bought as Barry's replacement but with Milner moving into the centre when Downing was out injured he has been forced to play on the right.  If Milner moved on, Downing could move inside but not in a central midfield two with Young outside him, it would have to be in a 4-5-1 formation.

Spurs have always been linked with Downing in the past and Harry is looking for a left wide midfield player so maybe a player exchange for Bentley could suit both teams. It would certainly make us a more balanced team.

I'm no huge fan of Bentley - or his hair - but if there's a deal to be made swapping him and Downing, I'll say a prayer that this will happen.

According to SSN Andy Marshall has been released by the club, will that give Parish the third choice? He went out on loan to a none league team last season, I believe.

I expect them to be more interesting in Ashley Young than Downing.

When I see people arguing the case of players like Doyle, I wonder if to some degree (if not entirely), they're doing so as they know he's the sort of player the manager will sign, rather than because they really believe he's the type to push us on.

That isn't the way it works. If we're linked with a player we give our opinion on him. In this case, I think he'd a decent player and said the same when he was at Reading. Given the choice I'd prefer Torres but that doesn't mean that I'm unable to appreciate the ability Doyle has and how he'd be an asset to us.

When we're linked with Ireland I say I think he'd be a liability because, for all his talent, he lacks the required application.

Last week you said you'd be happy with him, Chris.

I still think Downing can offer something here. I also think getting in genuine competition for his place like Bentley could be beneficial. Maybe the two of them fighting for a spot as well as pushing Ash to keep his performances up, will be beneficial.

There are few better crossers of a ball in the top flight than Bentley. I would say he's beginning to put the hard yards in and sorting his attitude. But still, Spurs will sell him, as I'm sure they'll be looking for another wide man.

If we keep Milner, not as a direct replacement. To my mind he's a luxury player, one who is great at home against Wigan but not much use away at Chelsea when you don't see a lot of the ball.

Agree with this.

I think Bentley could be a good move for us.  The current two widemen (Ash and Downing) are both better on the left, so if we do sign A N Other he needs to be right sided.  Having the three of them for competing for two spots would be quite healthy, IMO.

I think that the Liverpool fan who wrote the article that Gregnash linked to in the Benitez Thread said pretty much exactly this - that O'Neill had done a great job considering the stature of the club and therefore what players we were likely to attract.

Slightly depressing that it's been/might be borne out.

I do think there's some truth in this.

We live in a media dominated world, and them constantly banging on about the SKY 4 + Spurs + Man City does create a feeling that those clubs are the ONLY ones to play for.  It may not effect players of the calibre of we've recruited so far, although some have since stepped up a level, but if we are trying to get that next level up (for example Huntelaar or Love as a new striker) they are good enough that those other teams would also be interetsed.  We can make a good footballing case to them for joining us and pay them well, but so can the others and then there is the factor of playing for a 'glamour' club.

It becomes very hard for a club like ours, who aren't a media darling!

Yes, and I'd have to say we'd have 3 of the best crossers in the top flight. I think if aythng, overplaying affected some of Ash's delivery's last term, but still, he'll put in 4-5 crackers every game. If we had better movement in the box, we'd have scored more.  Stewies delivery is also very good from the left.

heh. if you're like this now, you'll be climbing the walls after a month of "we won't move until the players are back from the world cup", and "the transfer window hasn't even opened yet". i reckon July earliest before MON decides to pick up the phone.

To be honest, I'm not holding out much hope.

Whoever MON buys anyway he'll be selling them in 2 years because they've not delivered.
