Add on the other millions of pounds they spent on Tevez, Adebyaor, De Jong, Barry, Santa Cruz...oh and did'nt they do well?

It's very difficult to see what point you're trying to make.

Arguing that Man City didn't get a return on the money they spent is absurd, given the marked improvement they made over the season before and given that 'value for money' isn't even a consideration for them.  When you also consider that they had two managers last season, one of whom was entirely new to the Premier League, you have to say they did pretty well.

In any event, what does Man City's transfer business last season have to do with whether Kevin Doyle is the type of signing we need this season?

They spent 200m and they're playing in the same European competition as us next season.

Your point being what?  That Kevin Doyle would be a good signing for us?  I don't see the connection.

Well we've spent a fair old bit and are in the same competition as Llanelli Town and Glentoran.

Well the connection is that you said that Collins and Dunne had'nt got us very far, so mentioning Lescott and Toure, i just made a similar comparison. That's all.

As for Kevin Doyle, we don't know how much Wolves want for him, or even if MON wants him. If it is £9m (and we don't know that) it does sound a lot for someone who's goalscoring record is'nt that great for club or country.

Collins and Dunne had got us far, shame the fuckers down the other end couldn't bag/create us enough goals.

The point being hilts, that a team who can spend £200m net in one season are our immediate competitors, suggesting that we did well to get anywhere near them, and that instead of criticism , maybe a bit of praise for the manager might be more appropriate.

He'll get no praise until he's won something for us.
In other words, never.

I'm watching this Football Aid, we could still do with Zidane in the midfield!

The manager deserves praise for what he has done.

He's got us to sixth and kept us there for three years. That's good work, and I am happy to admit it.

What I don't get, however, is people saying "year on year improvement", when quite clearly, it is consolidation at best.

Nobody really cares if we achieve sixth with two more points than last year, and two more than the year before, and in any case, that level of "improvement" - if you accept it as such - is insignificant.

It is good work keeping us there, but in the same way that it is wrong to suggest he's clueless, let's also not dress it up as some kind of Herculean achievement, because it is not.

The big test is whether we can now push on. For my money, we're not going to do it unless we start buying players with the quality to do that.

When I see people arguing the case of players like Doyle, I wonder if to some degree (if not entirely), they're doing so as they know he's the sort of player the manager will sign, rather than because they really believe he's the type to push us on.

We could do with Nicky Byrne at right back, Murs up the wing and Shepard in midfield.

Good post paulie, hard to disagree with anything you say.

What i would say is that we are not going to be able to attract the top players, we need yto buy players like Milner, Delph, AYoung, and Davis, and hope that they fulfil their potential, and advance the team with them.

Now i think MON has done that, and i think that his buys stands up against anyones.Wether he or anyone else, with the current level of investment, can advance us above 6th is another question.

As much relevance as comparing us us to those gimps in the swimming trunks giving each other the bumps on BGT.

I agree, blf, we can't get the top players at the moment, but we need to find the right players for us.

This is a key summer for us. Sixth two years in a row looks like solidity. Three years and it looks like consistency. Four years and it starts to look a bit like stagnation.

What I think is obvious is that next season, we can't just do "our thing" as we have the last two years, as we'll get away with it less than we did last season.

We need to start finding new ways to play, to freshen things up a little. We need to find a player with a "spark" in the same way we got a spark when we signed Ashley.

Difficult, but then again, if it were easy, football managers wouldn't be earning several million pounds a year.

When we signed Withey, everybody was asking why we had bought a 30 yr old journeyman. Was'nt too bad was he?

Its almost impossible to judge how a player would fit in/settle, thats why i think his policy of home grown players, who have experience of Prem Lge/England is not as flawed as some seem to believe.

Doyle is not a bad player, and i would probably prefer him to Keane because of his age.

Doyle would'nt be a gamble, a player like Berbatov would.I think MON would take more of a gamble when he is happier with his strikeforce.
