Do people think that Arsene Wenger is a good judge of a player?

Quote
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admitted recently that he was a fan of the Wolves forward:

"I like him personally.

"He is an intelligent striker.

"He's good everywhere. I followed him since he was at Reading."

I don't know everyone makes mistakes, he spent £10 million on
Eduardo.

Who was a great player until that Small Heath donkey crocked him. Shame on you Arsene for not foreseeing that.

Great? he scored some goals in the League Cup for them, I think the word 'great' is a bit much.

Perhaps, but he was a very highly rated player that Wenger payed £7.5m for (not £10m) which seems a pretty decent deal to me.

I agree he looked alright, but great is a bit much. But fair enough I'll move on from Eduardo to Jeffers and Wreh. Point is he is not faultless in his opinion on players.

All managers make mistakes, Chris, as  believe you've pointed out yourself several times when it suited (Francis Jeffers, Richard Wright).

So do you think his comments about him being an intelligent striker are misplaced?

Quantify what Wenger means by 'Intelligent'
We need a striker who scores goals, not somebody like Heskey who continually get's off the hook with the spurious claim 'He works hard for the team.'

It usually means that he has good movement, good touch and awareness of others. That he also has a pretty decent scoring record makes him an obvious target.

It isn't a spurious claim re Heskey, he does work hard for the team.

So, do you disagree with him that Doyle is an intelligent striker and if so, why?

To be fair Mark, sometimes football has a little more subtlety than that.

It's the reason Mickey Quinn never wore a Villa shirt. The fat, scouse, waste of a tache.

We need a goalscorer Chris, we have for some time.
Doyle just doesn't score enough.
If we do show an interest, don't think for one second that he'd go for less than £12m
Especially if we get mega money for Milner.

I wasn't saying anything about whether he is or not. You seemed to be suggesting "Arsene Wenger thinks he's a decent player, so he must be".

I'm pointing out that all managers sometimes get it wrong, as you normally point out yourself.

Is he an intelligent player? Maybe he is, I'm sure he's had to be at times, playing at Wolves last year.

The one thing we really need to improve on next season is our goalscoring. Is Doyle likely to improve that situation enough? Not in my opinion, no.

I agree, which is why I wish we would look abroad. We could get so much better value for money.

Put Doyle in a good team and he'd score more often-can't help wonder why mon didn't go for him last year though !

We're going to have to get out of that mind set with Cyclops O'Neill, Paul.

Sadly that is true and very frustrating.

Kevin Doyle is better then Heskey, but not as good as Carew.  If all we add to the frontline this summer rates somewhere between our 2nd and 3rd choice strikers, then we simply won't improve enough to get 4th.  If we bring in Doyle AND Keane for Carew and Heskey, then I don't think that would be sufficient either, even though Keane offers something different.  However, if we kept Carew and just effectively swapped Keane for Heskey, then that might make the difference.

I suppose what I'd saying is that I don't think signing Doyle makes any sense to me!

Would make sense. For Sunderland obviously, not for us.
