I can't believe that Fletcher cost 7 mill..

I can.
His goalscoring record in the Premiership is better than the highly feted (on here) Doyle.

Fletcher- 4 mill
Doyle- 3 mill

In sensible land anyway.

Doyle would make a decent 4th choice here, but how much are we willing to fork out for a squad striker?

I reckon we could get a proven goalscorer from Europe for less than Doyle.

Oh...Europe...fuck.

No, Kevin, to have something relayed from MON's chief scout isn't enough these days.

We're operating under new burden of proof rules.

That's why, although the wage bill figures in the audited accounts of Tottenham Hotspur PLC and Aston Villa suggest we have a larger wages bill than them, in actual fact, that's not anything like decent evidence .. just, just, just because ...

...just, just, just  because the figure listed under wages in the accounts doesn't tell the whole story.

Spurs have a much higher "player amoritisation" figure in their accounts, which could be where they record player signing on bonuses and image rights payments for example, thereby keeping the headline wage figure lower.

There is no question that Spurs spend more on their playing squad that Villa do.

You said he’s not more prolific than what we’ve already got. You were wrong.

If Doyle had have played the same number of games for us as Heskey did, he’d have scored more goals in that time. That opens up the possibility for us having more points and a higher league placing.

That would be an improvement

But what about all those goals that Heskey creates for other players ?

Oh wait..... that only works when he plays with Rooney

Our midfield players scored approx. twice as many goals with Heskey on the pitch compared to Carew last season, which is more or less what all of the professionals say is the important thing that Heskey brings.

That can't be right tomstlh, because Wenger is a football God, who only buys unknown foreign kids, and makes them into superstars, he would'nt be after the same players as that plonker MON, surely.

If we sold them players that Mark F had listed earlier, you would probably get about £22m, so not quite the disaster everyone thinks.

To go on about Heskey/Harewood etc, and not mention Milner AYoung etc as examples of MONs transfer dealings, really give an unbalanced slant.

You  don't like him, fair enough, but do we have to constantly endure the pathetic snipeing all the time?

Well there quite obviously is, because that's not what the accounts show.

What I don't understand is why some on here appear desperate to believe the opposite.  It's not as if the relative wage bills have any bearing on Martin's ability as a manager.

Both clubs spend a lot on players and a lot on wages.  Whether one club is slightly ahead of the other in either respect is beside the point really.  In comparison to Man City, us and Spurs are at a similar level financially.

I suspect the reason some want us to be behind Spurs in the financial stakes is that it gives them an excuse to offer as to why Spurs did better than us last season.  The real reason is because their manager got them playing better football and scoring more goals which won them more matches.

Harewood and Heskey combined cost 7.5m and I'm pretty sure Fletcher last season scored more league goals than both combined have managed here.

Doh.

Yes Mark F.......MON has such a bad record of buying good up and coming youngsters, and seeing them improve dramatically.

Milner, Ayoung, Delph.......they're all shit aren't they.

Milner, Young and Delph were hardly unknown quantities were they?
Nearly £30m for the 3 of them.

Good signings, but what about

Sidwell, Heskey, Salifou, Harewood, Davies, Reo Coker, L.Young, Beye?

Rejects one and all and cost over £30m.

His transfer market dealings are pretty shoddy, which is why i'm hoping against hope that Milner doesn't leave and give him more money to waste.

You could argue that they are being moved on to improve us.
I always felt Beye was a squad player who could be called on in an emergency.
Have signings like Freidal, Cuellar, Dunne, Collins been shoddy?
We are evolving and in order to improve we need to move on certain players.
Make no mistake, when Man City make CL several players who get them there will be moved on.
All managers make mistakes in the transfer market, as well as the sucessful ones. If MON was so shoddy with his signings i doubt we would have had 3 consecutive top 6 finishes with an improvement on the previous seasons pts total.

I heard Doyle is going to Arsenal.

Yeah, he's bought himself a ticket in the West stand for their first pre-season game.

Steven Fletcher is a reasonably good player. I didn't think he would have done as well in the Premiership as he had at Burnley. He should be a guaranteed starter for Scotland as he is one of our better players. I also think as an all round striker he is much better than Doyle. Younger too.

I was a bit surprised at the fee that said.

Incidentally Doyles record in the league last season was marginally better than Fletchers.

Doyle netted 9 times in 34 games.
Fletcher 8 times in 35 games.

And Doyle played mostly as a lone striker. Burnley played largely with Fletcher and Paterson up top.

Quite why I'm making the argumet I don't know, because neither is good enough for us.

Harewood was never good enough for us.

Never stopped MON spunking £4.5m out for him.

I'm sorry, but those stats are poor. That's an average return of 1 in 4.

1 in 4 is not what we need to be signing.

1 in 4 when Wolves main tactic is to attack the 18 yard line is a minor miracle. They only scored 13 at home all season.
