I think in the past MON has been right to buy from the PL. He replaced 3 defenders out of our back four last summer and if we had done that with players with no PL experience we would have gained a lot less points.

According to whom? That's a statement that could never be proved and is patently not true in my opinion.

You only have to look at our foreign defence when MON came in

laursen 3m
olof 5.6m
bouma 3.5m

and what he spent on poorer british versions.
Davies 8.5m
Knight 3.5m
Shorey 4m

You’ve carefully omitted the money he spent on Britons like Dunne and Cuellar. Not to mention that defender from that county off Somerset, Senegal, where that quintessential Briton Beye hails from.

He also signed a Welshman and an Englishman, the bastard.

Well, although it may or may not be true to say that buying foreign would have hurt us defensively last season, I think it's pretty much certain that buying players with PL experience only did NOT hurt us from that perspective.

It is also worth pointing out that transfer fees are on an escalating scale, so direct comparisons to the price of players signed 6 years ago can be misleading.

I am not MON's biggest fan but to put together four players that had never played together before and create a strong defense unit from the first time they played together was excellent management. To do this with experienced PL players is tough, to fly people in from around the world with no PL experience and ask them to deal with the physical demands would be extremely difficult. Who would you have bought last summer from overseas for a combined 20 million to create a solid defense from the start?

I think you're on to something there.
Maybe it's a problem with these foreigners not understanding MON's and John Robertson's accents. Which ever way you look at it, MON is the boss and he has to do what he's comfortable with. We can have the best scouts in the world but you can only lead a horse to water..

Was it last season our Player Liason Officer was told to get ready for tonnes of work with all the foreign players heading to B6? Is she still at the club?

You omitted them because your attempt to caveat your spiel with "replacements", didn’t mask the genuine thrust of your argument, which was about O’Neill only buying players with passports that have a Lion and a Unicorn emblazoned on the cover, which is garbage.

sorry ads but there was no anti-MON malice intended. its just seems a bit daft to ignore knight or Davies as olof's replacement seeing they relegated him to right-back. Likewise ignoring Shorey and choosing Warnock as Bouma's replacement. you could make the arguement that MON had to buy twice to replace the foreigners sufficiently. Superb outburst of HC paranoia from you there though :0)

No, your argument was that he’d replaced Johnny Foreigner with Jon Bull, who weren’t as good because O’Neill will only buy red, white and blue, which is patent nonsense.

Its also worth noting that if you look at objectively, Laursen and Bouma ultimately failed to hack it physically and retired early, whilst Mellberg wound down his contract for a massive deal from Juve. Not a single penny returned in transfer fees.

Was Wenger being myopic when he built his team on signing the best young French players?
