MON has brought in the club 27 first squad players :
(Agathe, Petrov, Sutton, Bardsley, Carew, Ashley Young, Maloney, Routledge, Salifou, Davies, Knight, Carson, Harewood, Reo Coker, Sidwell, Guzan , Shorey, Luke Young, Cuellar, Milner, Heskey, Warnock, Downing, Dunne, Delph, Collins, Beye)

19 had PL experience
4 other had SPL experience
Delph came from League One
Guzan from MLS
Salifou and Carew came from a foreign league

Lets try and do some math here.

Firstly, I think we should exclude Sutton and Agathe as they were out of window free agent signings and abviously only short term - bought because we couldn't get anyone else at the time.  So, that leaves 25 players where:-
72% (18) had PL experience
16% (4) had no PL, but UK experience (SPL and lower English leagues)
12% (3) were from outisde the UK altogether

If we were to buy only players with PL experience. Well then we doomed .

WE cant sign players from the like of the Sky 4 , the Evertons and Spurs who we are competing with would only sell us their crap.

So the only players we could get are from the teams who are  below us.
Thats not going to move you forward.

You think MON would have learned his lesson from the past.

so you cant really say just PL experience. Probably a load of old crap anyway coming out.

I've got no problem if MON gets his players largely from Britain as long as they improve us (and I'd argue the majority of his signings have) but what would worry me is if (and I emphasise 'if') we're not even considering players from beyond these shores. I don't think you can work like that in the modern game.

If this summer we signed Darren Bent, David Bentley, Diame, Stephen Ireland and Micah Richards, would we be happy that we'd done well and could push on or moan about them all being British/from the PL?

Richard Dunne
Stephen Warnock
James Collins
They were all signed from teams that finished below us.
In fact how many of our 1st team squad were signed from teams better then us, id say they all came from lesser sides.
i understand your point, but its flawed when you consider the signings we have made.
Tbh, most were underwhelmed when we were in for and then signed Dunne/Collins, but MON was proved correct on this.
When Freddie got injured, most fans on most forums wanted Shorey!
With all transfers there is an element of risk, some work out, some dont. Look at Veron when he came to this country, a world class player with a great reputation, yet he flopped at utd & chelsea.
MON knows what needs to be done, and he will do his best to get the players in who HE believes will move us forward.

Heskey would start over Bent.
Petrov would start over Diame.
Cuellar would start over Richards.
MON and Ireland would fall out.

It's also becomes flawed when you view the likes of Man Utd and Chelski buying Pl players ans they'll all be from clubs below them!

Let me change that.

I wasn't saying what I would do.
That's what MON would do.

Yes, he needs to see someone.

To me its trying to manage with one hand tied behind your back if you buy brit players to MON's extent. You're faced with paying more for possibly inferior british based players because you won't take the chance or waiting for foreign players to be a success here before buying them. again a costly idea. we haven't got the money to operate like that.

You only have to look at our foreign defence when MON came in

laursen 3m
olof 5.6m
bouma 3.5m

and what he spent on poorer british versions.
Davies 8.5m
Knight 3.5m
Shorey 4m

Pretty sure Redknapp signed loads from abroad at Pompey.

I looked at Harry's foreign signings some time ago. He had signed quite a few, double figures if I remember correctly.

The only one that would be considered an unmitigated success was the player he sold to Milan/Real (??).

It isn't just (or even) the money you lose on finding out these players don't cut the mustard in the PL, it is the points you drop in finding out.

I've always said that the likes of Wigan and Portsmouth can blood overseas players to get them up to speed without hurting their relatively modest league goals.  A club like us need them to hit the ground running, so that means we're looking in a smaller and more expensive foreign market.

Which isn't to say we shouldn't shop in it more!

I think in the past MON has been right to buy from the PL. He replaced 3 defenders out of our back four last summer and if we had done that with players with no PL experience we would have gained a lot less points. We now are in a position to take a risk, we need to find a partner for Gabby, someone who can link up play and score goals. With the foundations in place we can look to gamble on a talented player with limited PL experience.

A good player is a good player wherever he plays his football.  Many (most?) adapt to a new league, some don't.  If O'Neill is half as good as he's made out to be he should back his judgment on a few of these players like Bruce does.  In the modern game it's just barmy to limit yourself to players with PL experience.   As someone pointed out the other day, the summer we signed Harewood, Blackburn siogned Santa Cruz.  Which signing made more sense, from either a football or financial viewpoint?

I think that's it for me.  I have no issues with what he's done so far, but to go up the next step I do think we have to expand the recruitment sphere.
