Luckily for us, Harewood's transfer fee was'nt huge. He was a squad filler, nothing more.

For a third-choice, couldn't get anyone better, signing it was very huge indeed.

Was'nt it £3.5m? It's a lot to write off, but then again i can't see Liverpool getting anywhere near their £11m back for Ryan Babel.

Which even three years ago was relatively modest by PL standards.

I see you use the lowest end of the figures quoted but no matter - we still didn't get our money's worth.

That's depressing to read. How myopic a transfer pre-requisite is that?

No problem at all with a predominately british/ home countries core. But if we're disregarding players perfectly adequate for our needs on the basis of their passport -and paying way over the odds for similar UK based players- someone needs to have a word.

His interest in Sneidjer often gets trotted out in his defence - a player who we didn't actually sign, lets not forget. But any numbnut could tell you one of the best midfielders in the world might do OK in the Prem. There are a whole rake of players worldwide between Sneidjer's level and the the likes of NRC and Sidwell, players who are plenty good enough to improve us.

Myopic is exactly right.

OK, let's call it £4.5m then.  It's still a relatively low fee.

And I agree it wasn't value for money.

Gullit, Henry, Zola, Bergkamp, Fabregas, Viera, Drogba, Juninho, van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo, Schmeichel, Klinsmann, Tevez, Torres, van Persie. Doesn't the fact that our manager wouldn't consider buying any of them depress you even a tiny, little bit?

Slightly different argument as the players you mention, other than the ones in bold, were established international stars that ANY manager would take, regardless of where they play.

It's those in bold that came in as lesser known players and made their name that I think we should be after.  But then we HAVE done that with UK players such as Ash and Milner, so it's not all depressing.

If he doesn't want players without Premier League experience he won't want the ones you outlined either.

Or Petrov or Carew, so it's obviously bollocks.

Why are people getting worked up about it? Maybe some want to believe it, as it fits their perception, despite being at odds with the facts.

A list of obscure names from the BBC's world cup squad profiles.  Young, unheard of players ready to play for Villa.

Anyone heard of them?  Are they any good?  If nowt else it'll make the more random matches more interesting to watch.

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN Not since the emergence of Michael Laudrup 30 years ago has a young Danish player generated so much hype. He counts Dennis Bergkamp and Jan Molby among his admirers and is widely tipped as a future star.

SOTIRIS NINIS There are high hopes for the Panathinaikos starlet, an attacking midfielder rated as one of Europe's most exciting prospects. However, Rehhagel has so far proved reluctant to place too much trust in the youngster, who is likely to begin on the bench.

GARY MEDEL Medel is known as The Pitbull for good reason; a fearless ball-winner in midfield or at full-back, he has graduated from the Chile side that finished third at the Under-20 World Cup in July 2007. He had already made his senior debut by then and has been a constant fixture in the side since his competitive bow in the fifth round of World Cup qualifiers two years ago.

TRANQUILLO BARNETTA The left winger has shouldered the responsibility for being Switzerland's main source of creativity since he became a regular five years ago. He was short-listed for Fifa's Best Young Player award at the last World Cup, but was one of three Swiss players to miss in the penalty shoot-out defeat by Ukraine. Barnetta has just completed his sixth season in the German Bundesliga, and his fifth with Bayer Leverkusen.

MICHAEL BRADLEY The son of US national coach Bob has overcome the inevitable accusations of nepotism to become a vital member of the team. Bradley anchors the midfield but admits he "can't afford to be one-dimensional." Five goals in World Cup qualifying are testament to the fact he isn't. He has been a mainstay of the Borussia Mönchengladbach midfield for the past two seasons.

NICOLAS LODEIRO The new hope of Uruguayan football, the skilful playmaker only made his debut in the first leg play-off win against Costa Rica and was many pundits' man-of-the match in the 1-1 draw that sealed qualification. Lodeiro has been praised for his technical ability, intelligence on the ball, explosive bursts of pace and a clinical eye for goal. He joined Ajax in January, teaming up with international team-mate Luis Suarez.

AND TWO FROM THE "YEAH RIGHT CATEGORY"

MAREK HAMSIK The side's star player and skipper, Hamsik - a skilful, attacking playmaker - is also one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe, thanks largely to an excellent goalscoring record.

YOANN GOURCUFF Considered to be the natural heir to Zinedine Zidane, the 23-year-old Bordeaux playmaker made his international debut in 2008 and was in inspirational form during qualification, which included a 30-yard equaliser against Romania - his first goal for France and one that is credited with saving Domenech's job.

Lets just sign the fookin lot of them ;-))

One sentence from an interview taken out of context (from my reading of the article) and we get 5 pages of comments.

It does not, in my opinion, say that is MON's transfer policy. It refers to his policy about this years world cup and only reflects what many people say i.e. many players bought off the back of a good world cup often fail in England.

If it'd been something in one of the red tops with no quotes, that's one thing, but this is a direct quote from MON's Chief Scout.

It's hardly the flakiest of sources.
