Right fair enough, although I don't think Guzan can be counted as a success yet. The point is that we predominantly look at players with Premier League experience and that is eliminating a lot of the football world. Plus it is more of a strain on financial resources.

True, but look at the amount of mediocre oversea's players Liverpool have brought in and it's not done them any good recently. It's cost their manager his job.

I'm not disagreeing with you by the way. Yes, i'd like to see him look abroad a bit more, but bringing in Premiership experience is not a bad thing.

Ok, but for every Delph there is Shorey, Harewood, Sidwell.

Carlos? Carew? Guzan? Ashley Young?

carlos had expeirence playing in the SPL , everybody knew he was a good player as he was a key figure in rangers uefa cup run .

carew was an exchange and a one off.

guzan. lol a goalkeeper is that the best MON symphathisers can come up with .

Ashley young had premiership experience he starred for watford when they where in the prem thus leading us to pay a high sum of money for him . (he was also wanted by other premiership teams)

Before we get bogged down in this argument again, it's also worth pointing out that Storey-Moore said that any scout going to the World Cup looking to unearth a superstar has already probably missed out due to the fact most clubs get the players that are there that they want either signed up or welded to new contracts.

I was as disheartened as the next fan to see Storey-Moore's admittance of MON's scouting policy but I also think that what targets the club do have are already in the works.

It does make me wonder why the hell we're sending a scout there in the first place though if we could have spent all last season looking at the players we want to sign!

That's depressing to read. How myopic a transfer pre-requisite is that?

Surely the best thing to do is to bring in players who will be the best we can get, and who we think will fit in at the club?

That's not going to mean entirely overseas players, but if we have anything like a sensible transfer policy, it also shouldnt mean only UK experienced players.

Harry Redknapp works in a similar way, rarely buying players who haven't already got experience in this country. It's just the way they prefer to operate, I don't see why it should depress you.

never had you down as a redknapp fan chris? presumbly the other managers in the cl or indeed the rest of the pl are barking up the wrong tree looking for a mixture of foreign and home based players in their transfer dealings

Pretty sure Redknapp signed loads from abroad at Pompey.

I can't understand why Martin thinks players with no Premier League experience aren't worth buying.

The Premier League, perhaps more than any other league, demonstrates that overseas players can not only do a job here but can thrive.

Operating under this policy is not to the club's advantage.  How can it be, limiting yourself so severely in who you can choose from to fill a position?

Is anyone else curious as to why the bit that's gotten people all worked up is the only bit that ISN'T a direct quote from ISM?

It does also beg the question how the likes of Cuellar, Guzan and Carew ended up at Villa if the quote is true.

Well Guzan I have no idea, but Cuellar plays in Scotland and that's close enough for M'ON I imagine. Carew was just a trade.

I think 'based in Britain' is more accurate.  Guzan, Carew and Salifou are, I think, the only exceptions in 4 years.
