Never ever make signing decisions on players based on their performances in World cups or Euro cups.  Its a lot like eating yellow snow imo

It's one of the core mistakes of the transfer market: buy the recent tournament's top scorer based on those goals. It almost never, ever works.

Agreed. But if Torres tops the scoring charts this year I won't object to us signing him.

Of course, but we'd hardly want him because he was World Cup top scorer, we'd want him because of everything else we know about him.

I think Liverpool made the classic post-tournament error when they signed Baros. That was textbook what-not-to-do.

I was kidding - you're absolutely right - didn't they spunk £14m-odd on Diouf as well on the back of Senagal having a good tournament?

Yes they did and he was shit

Are there any Villa links today?

They actually signed Diouf before the WC, I remember the commentators didn't stop banging on about it all tournament.

We may all agree that signing players based upon the World Cup alone is a bad idea, but that won't stop people having a pop at Martin for 'Not signing players like inset name here' that had a good game the night before!

They signed both Diouf and Baros before the 2002 World Cup and the 2004 Euro Cup respectively.

Anyone who hasn't heard of Gourcuff yet soon will.
Ridiculous player. If he moves it will be to one of the major sides. In saying that, he did have a stint at AC Milan a few years back and it didn't work out. He might be a Matt Le Tissier type -happy to be a big fish in a small pond.

I seen him home and away vs Ireland (WC play-off). He's a quality player. If only we could sign him.

He actually didn't have the best a games in both legs against Ireland, but he is a very good player. The season before last when he was on loan at Bordeaux was amazing, I can't believe Milan didn't want to keep hold of him. He only signed permanently last summer and for £14m as well. If he does move anytime soon it will be for big bucks, maybe Tigana will cash in if he has a good WC to rebuild, who knows?

What do you think of Gignac? Before them games, I was expecting big things but he was very disappointing (in the play-off games).

I've never been impressed with him to be honest, he was the only real goal scorer in an above average Toulouse side the season before last so his stats looked admirable. He's a Jon Parkin style big man, no pace and was found out last season. Not for me anyway, I think we need a strong skillful tricky forward. That's why I mentioned Lucas Barrios from Dortmund, over 6 foot tall but very tricky, turn on sixpence type.

I watched Gignac duirng the play off games and payed special attention to him as we had been linked.  To say I was underwhelmed wouldn't be doing it justice.

Blanc resigned at the end of the season, he's taking over France after the WC. Tigana was appointed the other week.

Lodeiro is really something very special. Eriksen, Barnetta and the rest are all good players, but watch out for Lodeiro, he really is something unbelievable. We have low chances of signing any of them though, because the whole of Europe is looking at these players and the instant we make a move, a bigger club will make its move.

After he moved from Nacional he was struggling to get a game for Ajax, whether that was down to a settling in period I’m not sure but he comes highly rated. Another one to watch out for is Alexis Sanchez of Chile although there would be doubts about there suitability to the English game as I’ve said before I’m interested to see how Christian Riveros settles in at Sunderland in that respect as he is the type of midfielder we could do with.

Gourcuff does look a very good player...BUT.....AC Milan let him go, and at international level seems to freeze.Would cost in excess of £20m, not sure i would pay that much........Ozil looks a better bet to me, not sure he would come, but if we sign Ireland would'nt need that kind of player anyway.

Sell Milner for £20m plus Onohua and Ireland, buy Parker and Bellamy, and a good up and coming midfielder,Dorrans?Sell Carew, Heskey,Sidwell,Cuellar,LYoung, and Shorey, then buy as good a striker as we can afford.

                               Friedel
 Onohua/Beye........ Davies/Collins/Beye/Dunne/Clark.........Warnock

        NRC/Petrov ...................Parker/Delph

                     Ireland/Downing/Bellamy

  Young /Albrighton.......................................... Bellamy/Downing

                      Gabby/Delf/New signing
