Why does everyone need a sell on value? Ok we make no money on keane but get 3 good years from him , the money made on milner mire than makes up for it, older players bring class and experience , they don't all need a sell on value!

If every player resulted in a transfer profit, we'd be a selling club.

With Keane the issue is the fee.  We wouldn't get much of it back, so it needs to be sensible.  Wages wise I think he'd contribute enough to be 'worth' what he eaarns.

He probably doesn't own 25 houses.

Some players we will make a profit on and some we won't-if robbie keane is successful here for 3 yrs and we win trophies or make the top 4 he will more than repay what we pay for him, we need a mixture of youth and experience and keane would be a great signing, I can't see it being more than £12m max and may include a deal involving reo-coker or shorey who have both interested harry in the past.

A list of obscure names from the BBC's world cup squad profiles.  Young, unheard of players ready to play for Villa.

Anyone heard of them?  Are they any good?  If nowt else it'll make the more random matches more interesting to watch.

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN Not since the emergence of Michael Laudrup 30 years ago has a young Danish player generated so much hype. He counts Dennis Bergkamp and Jan Molby among his admirers and is widely tipped as a future star.

SOTIRIS NINIS There are high hopes for the Panathinaikos starlet, an attacking midfielder rated as one of Europe's most exciting prospects. However, Rehhagel has so far proved reluctant to place too much trust in the youngster, who is likely to begin on the bench.

GARY MEDEL Medel is known as The Pitbull for good reason; a fearless ball-winner in midfield or at full-back, he has graduated from the Chile side that finished third at the Under-20 World Cup in July 2007. He had already made his senior debut by then and has been a constant fixture in the side since his competitive bow in the fifth round of World Cup qualifiers two years ago.

TRANQUILLO BARNETTA The left winger has shouldered the responsibility for being Switzerland's main source of creativity since he became a regular five years ago. He was short-listed for Fifa's Best Young Player award at the last World Cup, but was one of three Swiss players to miss in the penalty shoot-out defeat by Ukraine. Barnetta has just completed his sixth season in the German Bundesliga, and his fifth with Bayer Leverkusen.

MICHAEL BRADLEY The son of US national coach Bob has overcome the inevitable accusations of nepotism to become a vital member of the team. Bradley anchors the midfield but admits he "can't afford to be one-dimensional." Five goals in World Cup qualifying are testament to the fact he isn't. He has been a mainstay of the Borussia Mönchengladbach midfield for the past two seasons.

NICOLAS LODEIRO The new hope of Uruguayan football, the skilful playmaker only made his debut in the first leg play-off win against Costa Rica and was many pundits' man-of-the match in the 1-1 draw that sealed qualification. Lodeiro has been praised for his technical ability, intelligence on the ball, explosive bursts of pace and a clinical eye for goal. He joined Ajax in January, teaming up with international team-mate Luis Suarez.

AND TWO FROM THE "YEAH RIGHT CATEGORY"

MAREK HAMSIK The side's star player and skipper, Hamsik - a skilful, attacking playmaker - is also one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe, thanks largely to an excellent goalscoring record.

YOANN GOURCUFF Considered to be the natural heir to Zinedine Zidane, the 23-year-old Bordeaux playmaker made his international debut in 2008 and was in inspirational form during qualification, which included a 30-yard equaliser against Romania - his first goal for France and one that is credited with saving Domenech's job.

Lodeiro is really something very special. Eriksen, Barnetta and the rest are all good players, but watch out for Lodeiro, he really is something unbelievable. We have low chances of signing any of them though, because the whole of Europe is looking at these players and the instant we make a move, a bigger club will make its move.

Never ever make signing decisions on players based on their performances in World cups or Euro cups.  Its a lot like eating yellow snow imo

It's one of the core mistakes of the transfer market: buy the recent tournament's top scorer based on those goals. It almost never, ever works.

I remember MON saying in a interview that the only player he's ever signed on a tournament alone was Joos Valgaeren, when he was at Celtic. Not sure if Salifou comes into that catergory or if we had a scouting network in Switzerland at the time.

Is it me or has Tranquilo Barnetta been around the international scene for ages, but is still only 25! I though he was in his thirties.

For me a player to watch, will be Lucas Barrios. Plays for B.Dortmund and Paraguay and is a fine striker. Really good footballing brain, fine touch and a great finisher. He's over 6 foot but plays similar to Torres, really good balance and not afraid to take an extra touch in the box, always seems to be one move ahead of the defence.
He scored against Ireland the other night if anyone saw that game.

Seen a bit of Michael Bradley at Mönchengladbach and for the US. Decent allround player. Probably quite 'gettable' too.

Anyone who hasn't heard of Gourcuff yet soon will.
Ridiculous player. If he moves it will be to one of the major sides. In saying that, he did have a stint at AC Milan a few years back and it didn't work out. He might be a Matt Le Tissier type -happy to be a big fish in a small pond.

Another player I want to keep an eye on is the Danish keeper Stephan Andersen from Brondby. He's had a few aborted attempts at a career in England before, but at 28 he's just coming into the best years for a keeper.

Agreed. But if Torres tops the scoring charts this year I won't object to us signing him.

Of course, but we'd hardly want him because he was World Cup top scorer, we'd want him because of everything else we know about him.

I think Liverpool made the classic post-tournament error when they signed Baros. That was textbook what-not-to-do.

I was kidding - you're absolutely right - didn't they spunk £14m-odd on Diouf as well on the back of Senagal having a good tournament?

sotiris ninis will never be able to play at Premier League. He is a good player but not tough enough.

Gourcuff and Hamsik would never sign for Aston Villa. Why leave Bordeaux and Napoli for Villa.
Until we get Champion's League football we will not be able to sign big foreign players.
